I just ordered a 42" one from midwayusa.com for $17.

Here's the one I ordered:

I purchased a TAC Force soft gun case from RifleGear :) all I can say this is a top quality case, heavy zippers, lots of storage space, thick material, your AR is well protected. You can also add Xtra mag pouch or Tac Force pistol holster, the bag has plenty of room, can hold lots of ammo, glasses, tools, and a candy bar.

You can pay less but You get what you pay for, your AR deserves a nice bag.

I prefer discreet cases.

My favorite case is my Maxpedition Sliver II.

I do not care for cases I need to break down the rifle.

I do not care for "double" or multiple rifle cases - they're less practical than they seem.

You'll want to think about how you actually use the case - what kind of transport (air, simple range, etc.) Choose case(s) to match the need.

IMHO, if you're just using it to go to the range, just get the cheapest, slimmest, simplest case (discreet) you can find.

I like discrete cases. They hold less, but don't yell "FIREARM" to everyone watch me load the car.

At this point Im really leaning towards the Larue Covert case. Breaking the gun down isnt a big deal. Hmmmmm, all these decisions.

That's funny. My experience is that they turned out to be MORE practical than I thought it would be. In fact, I just ordered my second one.

P.S. -- The 5.11 double rifle cases are a great value...even at the close to $200 price tag they carry.

I have a Covert case. I like it, but it has this flimsy feel to it. I have this feeling that one day the velcros are going to give out and all my parts will be huddled at the bottom of the bag. Definitely get a short bag though, those full rifle length bags are not discrete at all

Funny that you mentioned the 5.11 double rifle case. Just ordered it! Haha. And best of all, it is on sale at LA Police gear for 69.99. I just couldnt pass it up. Just hope I like it. Im sure I will though.

Thanks for the input guys.

I'm going with Aplinker. I couldn't have said it better.

I don't like double rifle cases because at matches lugging 2 guns everywhere when I don't need two sucks.

If I'm going to fly I'll take a hard case with the foam gutted and put my soft cased guns inside. When I get to the hotel I leave the hard case and move my stuff in the soft cases.

+1 on the 5.11 double cases. I've lugged my .308 AR and PS90 in one of these without problem.

I know you said you already ordered one but these are awesome. I got mine from Sportsmanguide. It's actually a Vodoo Tactical that has a MSRP of $115.95

Is this the larue case?

The 5.11 double case is great. I picked one up because I was tired of carrying two cases to the range all the time. It is rugged and very well made. I really like the backpack straps, as a lot of the places I shoot I hike into.

Is there an (cheaper) alternative to the Larue Covert case? I like the idea of a smaller case to hold a broken-down AR, because even the short carbine cases still look like gun cases to me. Something just long enough to hold a 16" upper and lower broken down would be perfect. The Larue Covert case looks nice but I would like some options.

Is this the larue case?

Yes it is. I was really keen on picking one of those up, but like k3nnex said, it seems more flimsy. Thanks for confirming that and posting up your pic!
I was hoping for more rigid sides from the LR coverts.

For now, I'll stick to my Maxpedition sliver. It's small enough to be discrete without taking your rifle apart. Mine just barely fits lengthwise with the stock collapsed.

Oh, forgot to mention. The bags with the mag pouches and the triangle notch aren't very discrete if that is what you're after. The Sliver is rectangular with only one other med compartment in front of the main one.

For discreet, check out Blackhawk's Discreet Homeland Security cases. Otherwise, the Voodoo Tactical cases are a great deal and very well made. Also, Sneaky Bags makes nice super-discreet rifle bad (looks sort of like a short snowboard bag). Larue's bag, while nice, doesn't have pockets.
