Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum, but have heard good things over on sigforum, so I'd thought I would post this question over here. I have a bunch of legally-owned grandfathered AR magazines, and some are beat up or generally unreliable. I recall reading something about being able to legally buy replacement bodies for these magazines, and was wondering if anyone would know what the law here in California is regarding this. Would I sent the old mag bodies in? Who would I contact regarding replacement of these magazines? Any information would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance. --Ian

Yes, you can buy replacement parts for any of the parts, including the body.
You don't need to send your old ones to anybody.
Just because it is legal doesn't mean all vendors will ship to CA. You just need to find one who does.
Many people seem to think that keeping all of your original parts as some kind of proof would be helpful.

I've heard it suggested that you keep your old mag bodies or at least the floorplates o show that the replacement parts are really used for replacement purposes, especially since most of the new ones have date stamps on them.

Brownells has everything you need. They make great mags.
I did keep my old mag bodies. I took a sledge hammer to them and they are flat as a pancake:D . I wanted proof that they were replacements but wanted to makes sure they could not used again. I would take a picture but it would make people cry to see a box of mags just THRASHED.
why on earth was my post delited from this thread?
edit: LOL!!!! im such a space cadet. turns out he posted two threads. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=27381

I was at a NRA member's council meeting right after SB23 took affect. We had a SA from the firearms div. of DOJ there to answer questions on SB23. On repairing damaged magazines he said you could replace parts as long as 1 of the original parts remained.

according to the thread that was posted where a letter from the doj was quoted this is incorrect.
All parts could be replaced.

What I posted was what DOJ was saying in Y2K right after SB23 took affect. If you replaced all the mag parts it would be a replacement mag not a repaired mag. YMMV but that's the standard I'm going to play by. I lived thru these laws being put into place, I'm not a Johny come lately to all of this.

here's the thread i was talking about.
Q6: Is there any limitation to the number of parts you can replace in a legally obtained hi-cap magazine? (Scenario: if on successive days I replace each individual part of a legally obtained hi-cap magazine, am I guilty of assembling a new hi-cap magazine once the final part is replaced?)
A6: Whether the scenario you describe constitutes repairing or manufacturing a large capacity magazine depends upon the legal opinion of the prosecutor in the jurisdiction where the acts occur. There are 58 district attorneys in California's 58 counties. They could elect to prosecute you for a felony (Penal Code 12280(a)(2)), if they believed that you were manufacturing a large capacity magazine.
By always reusing 1 part from the old magazine you don't have to worry about this. Say I want to use the new magpul followers in all my 30 round magazines I could use magpul Ranger floorplates with original mag bodies. But if I had to replace the mag tube I would use the original floorplate with the original style magpuls. I have a bound compsition book writen in my own hand listing all my magazines and any repairs made to them. Some of our more legal scholars here could expound on why I have done this.
