Do I need a valid, aka non-expired CDL, to pick up a longarm after the DROS is complete? You see when I did the DROS my CDL was valid but now that the 10 days is up it’s expired and the DMV says it could take another 21 days before they get me a new license.

Background: Over three weeks ago I noticed I had not received a renewal for my CDL in the mail so I downloaded the forms and sent them with a check. Having not received my new license I called the DMV. They said it takes SIX WEEKS to issue a new CDL and I’m SOL until six weeks goes by only then they will research it.

On a side note the check cleared my bank on Friday so that at least means they got the renewal.

My daughter had her DL stolen. She called DMV and received her replacement DL in about ten days. I don't recall any of my renewals taking that long.

can't you get a temp DL from the DMV? you'll probably want to get one anyways.

i picked up 2 lcw-15s yesterday and only had my old expired CDL. The FFL didn't care because they had a copy of my current DL. I didn't even have the paperwork. I think he wanted to verify who I was.

Okay good, if that's the case I should have a new one any day now as it's been past 10 days. I can't remember back to 2001 to how long it took for them to get me a new CDL but with budget cuts who knows how long things could take :-)

You can get a temp, but it's best if you use it along with another form of photo i.d., like a passport. I did this when my wallet was stolen last year, but I didn't DROS anything. The DMV was actually good about getting my new license to me. I must've lucked out, because I had it within a week after going to the DMV office.

Probably the same FFL I used. Good to know, THANKS!

When you come to pick up the firearm, the FFL is mainly just looking at your ID to make sure it is the same guy who DROSed the firearm. So as long as you don't get rejected by the DOJ (I had a guy get rejected because I missed that his license had expired), odds are the FFL will not even look at the expiration and will just make sure the name and face match who you are. I would recommend you just show him you ID with your temp as a hidden spare just in case he notices. Otherwise, I don't think he will even notice.

Thanks Wes!

Good to hear that from an FFL

mine was set to expire at the end of dec. I went to dmv to get a new photo. Then they claimed i needed to take a driving test for my m1 license. which i didnt need since and 45 min of explaining it to the crossdressing thing behind the counter I got the new one in exactly 2 weeks. You just might get lucky.

I lost mine in September while traveling. When I got back on the 27th, I promptly applied for a replacement, and was issued a temporary one good for 60 days. Long about Thanksgiving, I still had not received the new one, and the temp was expiring within days, so I ambled in to a DMV office, stood in line, etc. finally to learn that they wanted to take a new picture. I was issued a "New" temporary license, had my photo taken and received the new license in another 3 weeks.

The temporary license is no good to buy a firearm, of course, so I missed out on the Veterans Day sale of shotguns at Big 5, among other things.

I project that within two generations, everyone still living in California will be either standing in line at, or working for, either DMV or the Welfare Office.

I also had a temporary DL because DMV wouldn't give a new one until I finished my commercial drivers license permit or motorcycle permit and my DROS was rejected by the DOJ and I had to do it all over and pay anoth $25.
