I am thinking of installing the google desktop onto my Win XP machine. I remember when it first came out, there was some controversy about the privacy of personal files being indexed by google. But when I search for information about it online, I only get sites updated in 2004-2006.

What is the latest information about google desktop. I really want something that will allow me to quickly search through all my files.

Is there a better alternative?

Will it use up too much resources to make it worth while?

I've had it on my machine at work for years and it was a godsend. Actually saved my derrier one time. That said, I switched machines and now only see the first 50 characters of results, making it useless to me right now.

If you don't run into that bug, I highly recommend the product. It did not seem to have an effect on performance and saved me countless hours searching through emails.

I had it for Windows XP too, but the Search in Windows Vista and 7 are wayyyyy better than the one in XP, so I'm fine with using default search.
