Sure come on down and bring your gear, usually when people come and watch for the first time they regret not doing so. For the most part the only type of shooting they have done was recreational plinking at the shooting range, but when they see this format for the first time they really want to try it out. All you need is a safe holster, pistol or revolver, magazines and or speedloaders, pouches, around 100 rounds of ammo, and hearing and eye protection. We seldom shoot more than 50 but that is in case you may have to reshoot a stage for some reason or another. You will go through the safety briefing that is required for all new people. We used to hold matches in Turlock but have moved operations to the new range, as a consequence we lost a number of the regulars but gained many new ones in the immediate area. Most of them are new to the sport so you should'nt be intimidated about going up against grand masters. There are a few competitive types (present company included) but it just friendly rivalry. Everyone has there own comfort level so don't worry about how fast the previous shooter shot the stage. As a matter of fact for new shooters we encourage them to actually take their time and walk through the stage and concentrate on accurate hits, speed will come later. The Safety Officer will even talk you through the course if you forget what to do next. At no time should you sacrafice safety for speed. All we ask from you is that you have a positive attitude, open mind, and most important be safety conscious.
BTW I am match director for the club so if you see an Asian guy on the range running around like chicken with its head cut off that would be me trying to coordinate the constuction of the stages, but I do look forward in meeting you. When you first get there leave your gear in the vehicle, the person you want to talk to is the club president. Just ask anyone and they will point him out, he is a real easy going. He'll get you started and soon you will be punching holes just like the rest of us.
Look forward to seeing you out there.

Sorry to bump up an old thread but Im pretty shure I will be attending(watching) the IDPA match that is comming up on 12/16 so I can go though the orientation for new memberships for the range.
BTW I know nothing about IDPA other than read the rules, looked at pics ect. Cant wait to see what its all about and possibly try it out for myself.
Nother thing, since Im not a member yet, how do I go though the locked door to get in? Is it open for public for the event?

oh damn, hey Nismo, if you see a guy with red hair and a black sweatshirt with yellow text on the back just watching, say hi to me :D
During the IDPA shoot, IIRC, the side gate is open for people to get in. My advice though, if you are not a member of the range, show up early to the shoot to see if they will let you. Hell, considering how long it has been since I went shooting, I might bring out my savage for when IDPA is done.

There should be someone there around 7:30 to have the door open. Normally I would be there at 6:00 but can't make it that day. You are more than welcome to watch, maybe even be forced to volunteer to do some range duties :D .

Actually, something just came up, what happens if it is raining? I assume that if the rain was like it has been today (alternating b/w insane downpours and nothing) that it would be postponed, but I want to know for sure...

Heres what they posted on their site "Weather is becoming a factor for this weekends match. We shoot rain or shine. But if the range conditions are not safe, we will have to cancel. Check back here and by Friday evening we will post if we will cancel or not.
If they cancel it, then I will see if they also cancelled for new member orientation or not.

Ha! Sandbagging at it's finest! It's only cuz you weren't there. You're G35 is kryptonite to me or something. :D
I honestly thought I was dragging arse big time. I completely blew stage 1. I guess it didn't hurt me as bad. Hopefully I can make it out there next time. Not bad I guess for a four month hiatus from Winton. And it was nice shooting with you too. Take care.
You ain't no slouch with that Sig. 4 month hiatas my foot! You were perfecting your "Gun Fu" during that time.

Han, I just checked some results. Aznglocker is one of the Sac town big boys:) In Oakdale you are running with Top Fuel dragsters, so yep, you will tend to move a little faster after a bit:) You are shooting better than when I last squadded with you, keep it going bud.

Do I require to use a service sized gun for the matches? I have a Sig and 1911 but I feel most comfortable with Glock platform and my only glock is a 26 subcompact. Guess I have to save up for a G19.

Any of the pistols mentioned are suitable and are IDPA legal. If you don't have it yet get a holster and magazine pouch secure enough to hold your gear. Kydex is the favorite but a bit pricey. Uncle Mike's makes an injection moulded rig that is pretty good and cost less than the price of Blade Tech Kydex. The good thing about this sport you don't need high dollar gear to play. I would stay away from the cheap nylon holsters that are usally hawked at gun shows.

What about holsters? Does it have to be an OWB belt holster? The only holster I have for my glock is an IWB.
