I'm trying to help a friend with an old laptop get on the internet. Does anyone know of either a USB or PCMCIA wifi adapter that will work with Windows ME?

Any of the USB 802 adapters will work with the correct drivers. I'd go with a namebrand like logitech, linksys, etc. The drivers should load Utomatically

I have some old PCMCIA wireless cards laying around which I have no use for.

I believe they work for Windows ME I can check when I get home if you like.

I am fairly close to you...

WIN ME???

OMG!! Someone still has this?

Tell your friend to upgrade to Ubuntu at a minimum.

I don't think MS even admits there was a WinME release.

Or at least dual boot w/ Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

Dual boot? What for? ME was the biggest mistake in the history of Microsoft. Even Vista was less problematic.

just upgrade ME to WinXP. It doesn't require much more recourses

"Sorry for bringing it up", otteray quietly squeaked back, in a tiny, timid whisper.

If the laptop is that old where it's running ME, I don't think it would meet the bare minimum to run XP and even if it did it would be EXTREMELY slow.
