Well they are pretty much almost the same thing...both are high velocity and smaller caliber than the what use to be the standard (the 7.62 x 51). From what I understand...the 5.45 tends to tumble more in soft targets. The 5.56 fragments after some penetration. I believe I've seen some illustrations by Martin Fackler.. a ballastics expert, to confirm this.
