Nice work... having fun shooting them?

Out of curiosity, why did you choose to put the Jewell in the 16" instead of the 20"?

Actually, I am waiting on a RRA 24" SS Bull BBL (Varmint) upper that I'm going to mate w/ a Magpul PRS stock / FF'd with Badger Stabilizer Tube / FoxBat grip / SuperSniper 10x w/ Talbot QD Mount System (slightly higher-end design than LaRue) etc. I have everything ready (upper should be here in 3-4 weeks), and I couldn't wait to test out that famed "go button." Plus, it is already adjusted- so when the upper comes, I'll just have to drop it in and...."VOILA!" This will be my crowning personal achievement (so far!), and you guys will be the first to see it. If I wasn't tapped out after all this "activity," I'd put a Jewell on all my AR's & my Remy 700 ( even though I just -yesterday- completed my first 700 trigger rebuild/adjustment: zero creep, and it breaks like a toothpick made of ice @ 2.25 lbs.!)- BUT.....the Jewell is everything it's reputation makes it out to be......and more .;)

Oh, I forgot to answer your first q.: FUN? But that would be a travesty of an understatement, if there were ever one, my dear boy!!!!!!!:smilielol5:

CMMG upper in 5.56 with medium contour barrel and lower w/CMMG parts kit, GGG rear sight - she's a Bullet Button build.

I put 50 rounds through her earlier today of both Aguila 55gr. and Igman 62gr. - ran without a hitch and got her decently zeroed @ 50 yards. My first upgrade will be a new stock, but I dig the (((SPROING))).

Now for the name... AR-I ? OLL-Y ? Or (if I'm feeling dyslexic) LOL-Y ??

I don't think it's a good idea to use your riser to "bridge" the handguard and the upper receiver rail.

Especially with magnified optics.

Mine's not sexy with all the Picatinny rails, lights and doo-dads, it's just for across-the-course at 200-yards - but it has a White Oak upper with 11 target crown and pinned NM rear sight...

Why? Is there flex between the HG and the upper? And if so, wouldn't it be negated by an FF forearm?

The point of a free float tube is than any pressure or flex put on the tube is not transferred to the barrel. If you mount your sight on the tube, or bridging to the tube, then any shift from will be transferred to the optic.

Unless, it's a monolithic rail, the handguard rails and the upper receiver rail only "appear to be be aligned". Since they are not really aligned on the microscopic level, any shift due to vibrations will cause the scope to flex.
It's not anyone's fault really, it's just the fact that the upper and the handguards were machined in different places.
The new trend in scope mount in one piece scope mounts like Larue, Wilson Combat, etc.

This is why the SPR Mk12 had a really really long riser rail that ran from the rear sight all the way to the gas block.

It's good that you have a one piece scope mount, I've seen people put one scope ring on the upper receiver rail and the other scope ring on the handguard rail.

While I think it's probably a better idea to mount it only on the receiver, the one-piece mount itself acts as a monolithic rail. I really doubt it would be an issue at all.

Hahah! Thanks! Electric, yup, the M2 does great at Angeles at the 100 yard steel plates, but I wanted the ACOG to be able to reach out a little farther, plus, I hate wearing my glasses, so the ACOG lets me shoot even the 100 yard plates easier! I blame you for me HAVING to buy the magnified optic! I've only got to shoot with this particular ACOG at a 25 yard range, but I have plenty of experience with the ACOG TA01NSN at much farther distances. I guess I'll be at Angeles soon to zero this bad boy in! Hope to see you there Electric!

How do you like your magnifier?

Josh3239
08-27-2007, 9:42 PM
I like it, it seems to be worth the money. Definetly a nice alternative to the Aimpoint although the eye relief isn't great. It really is a great combo with the EoTech. I need to go to a range and really test it though ;)

sardaukar - That's the REI special. Brunton 7x16 on LaRue pivot mount. The eye relief is horrible but it still works well enough to allow me to see my spectacular misses down, down range.

I've always wondered about using one of those or something similar. Seemed like a great way to get a black eye. I might try it for fun -- since I have one of those mounts with my Aimpoint magnifier. Aimpoint doesn't make a 7X (and we all know 7 is bigger that 3 ;) )

uclaplinker - Airsoft, it's just for looks. But, seriously, I have long, feminine fingers so I just reach over with my support thumb and click away. Note: this doesn't work for chicken chokers, hence the Stubby Tango Down grip. BTW, your avatar cracks me up.

ghost - Thanks dude!

You're doing some serious hand gymnastics to flick your light on. Looks is sometimes a good reason!

These are my range rifles.

Both have fixed mags (10/30), but I am going to be converting them to use MM grips, change out the adjustable stock with a fixed one, and the bullet buttons for both next week, and replace the FH with YHM Muzzle Brakes.

Both are built on Stag Receivers and the uppers and parts kits are DPMS.

What were these mistakes you mentioned?

You can't see it in this picture, but there are several scratches on the lower. I also installed the selector incorrectly the first time, broke it trying to remove it, and was forced to order a different selector. It is nothing major and the gun functions excellent...so far. I'm just a perfectionist and was a little disappointed in my reading skills and ability to follow instructions.

(Just adding to this thread, though the info is a repost from the Rifleman's Forum)

After many years of great service, my Oly PCR got a new upper and a very updated look. As this was bought in the late '90s, it was after the Fed AWB but before SB23 so it was, by Fed standards, unfeatured. Once I registered it for SB23, I never bothered to look for any other parts for it in fear of adding something illegal. After joining this forum I found out that once the Fed AWB went away, I could add anything I wanted feature-wise to a reg'd SB23 rifle. I also found Randall from ar15barrels.com. Below is the result.

First up is the rifle in its original format. I still like it very much this way and will be putting this upper on a featureless, MMG'd OLL.

Here's the new goodness:

VERY nice Bryan.

IMO, I like the black rail guards, they add that bit of contrast to the rifle.

What did u use to paint???

09-18-2007, 11:23 PM
yes, VERY NICE paint job! Did you duracoat it? My rattle-can job definetly didn't come out that clean! I'd go with the black guards as they give it some contrast as well as match up with the scope, bipod and grip. Very similar to what I want to build next, except in 7.62!

Yes, it's DuraCoat. I broke it down and sprayed each piece with an airbrush.
Strange stuff to work with, it's real glossy at first but 3 weeks later it's still flattening out.
The color is Magpul FDE and is spot on with the Magpul stuff.

Many won't notice, but you don't see a lot of 24" Wilson air-gauged bull barrels with a LaRue forearm.
The reason is because they don't fit together (this ain't Lego land).
You have to machine the forearm to get it to fit over the BB and LaRue won't do it for you, so don't bother asking them.
Also, the CMMG gas block is the only one on the market (that I could find) that would fit over the BB AND go under the LaRue.

ETA: Sorry, picture thread.

Bryan,
your Stag is beautiful. It's one of the nicest paint jobs I've seen.
Which Leupold did you go with?

Bryan
09-21-2007, 5:39 AM
Thanks Chico (and all) for the compliments.
Technically, The leupy is a: Leupold Mark 4 8.5-25x50mm LR/T M1 Illuminated TMR Reticle #60065.
It's the finest optic I've ever owned and the only one that I've used that allows me to focus both the reticle and the parallax with out wearing my glasses. At 25x you could pick where in the 10 ring you want to place your shot (as if I can do that).

I should start a new thread for the Pelican case.

Fast enough for CQC... The scope has a large eye piece with 30mm tube and illuminated reticle. Because the scope being high like that, when I zero it for 50yrds, it's 4" high at 100yrds and zero again at 200yrds with the 16" barrel.

The scope is by Vector Optics. Affordable but not made cheap ($180). It's beefy, durable, and glass is clear. It's 1-4x24 First Focal Point. Perfect for 3-gun. I actually dropped the scope about 3 feet high when I was first mounting it but no damage and turrets returns to perfect zero even after completely rotating it 360 degrees and back.

Perfect substitute for the $1200 IOR for people on a budget. ;)

It's a his/hers set. . . my first duracoat attempt, and the attempt was multicam - details and some process pics in "the mother of all refinishing threads" (gunsmithing section) Switched the green layer w/ pink for the wife's.

Didn't quite get the multicam feel down this time, but the next one will be spot on :) 1st one's always a bit iffy.

Pink rifle - 16" lightweight 1/7 twist CMMG barrel, Clark carbon fiber FF tube cut down to mid-length, EOtech, DNTC comp.

Multicam rifle - 18" CMMG SPR profile barrel 1/8 twist, JP tube, Meopta R1 1-4X illuminated K-dot on Larue SPR-E. Took some guts to duracoat that scope/mount.

Both rifles - CMMG upper receiver, Stag lower, CMT guts (staked by Denny at Global Tactical Supply), Grant's very nice U-15 stocks, 3 lb. triggers on both done on Stag lower parts kit by Bill over at ar15.com, DNTC comp. I'm going to shooting school w/ the wife next week :) Wanted her to have something that looked special, was lightweight and easy to use.

Metroshot in San Fernando received my SL8-6, and Gunrunners in Duarte received my SL8-1.

Call Chris at Lan World Inc. and he will hook you up, or call Hector at Cold War Shooters and he will hook you up.

The SL8 will need to be shipped disassembled, and you will need to contact 69Mach1 (Tom) here on the forum to make a polymer thumbhole stock plug, or you can pick up the bullet button Radd is supposed to release for the SL8 very soon (last time I checked).

Hope this helps.

Here's some new pics of mine, I just put the new toy on it, the PEQ/2A. Actually, it's a fake. I put it on there to simulate the real one that I use, but can't take home from work! I actually put some sand in a sandwich bag and stuffed it inside to make it weigh about the same. It's a super real clone, it even has the insight tech label....though it's a tad bit thicker than the real one (it's supposed to hold airsoft batteries). Don't worry guys (and girls) everything else on it is 100% real! I just can't afford my own personal PEQ/2A!

Don't know why but I never posted this one before...

A build for my girlfriend, she promised not to paint it pink. This is her gateway into firearms, and is purely a range toy so don't mind the cheap glass.

J&T Lightweight tactical 1/9 fluted 16" HBAR
FF Forearm (I dont see her needing to hang anything off this rifle anytime soon)
RRA NM Trigger (definitely needed to help squeeze those groups together)
Hogue grip + Magpul CTR
Cheapie optics and mount (she can go buy her own nice glass!)

Despite being 1/9 it will stabilize 77gr SMKs from my handloads. It shoots hovering at about 1 MOA to 350yds with them.

If your net skills and google-fu are strong you'll be able to find the full galleries of the pics. The gallery isn't hidden, if your into models and pretty girls you should be able to find them easily where those types of things are found.

As far as this being a pic thread, more of the simple life.

That link is for pick n pluck type foam. IMHO, its much easier if you buy the better "closed cell" Polyethylene Bottom foam as it doesn't absorb gun oils and it really can be accurately cut with just a kitchen knife :D

Finished my build well i don't think it will every be "finished" but it works now :44: got to shoot it last weekend. Still learning the iron sites b4 i go for an optic. leaning towards and eotech or a 1-4x variable. the gun is mostly for 3 gun.
quick run down stag lower, stag 2ht upper, rra lpk with 2 stage trigger, ctr stock.

Definitely not Plick n' Pluck. Did you read over the techinque?
The example is done in polyurethane foam. I agree polyethylene foam is the better option.
The link shows a technique to cut the foam with a hot wire cutter for the most professional result. Works equally well in polyurethane and polyethylene.

Ok here is my contribution. 16" Stag upper and lower with an MI rail, and a Trijicon TA31RCO. Oh and a Prince 50 Mag lock. I wanted to get as close to a Marine Corps M4 as possible.

The 20" was supposed to be a Sam-R, but money doesn't grow on trees around my house. RRA upper and lower, DPMS stock, Ergo Sure-Grip, PRI Scout Rail, Arms 22 med rings, RRA 2 stage trigger, Larue 12.0 free float, YHM flip front sight, KAC rail covers, Super Sniper 10x42, ARMS #40 LP BUIS, Harris Sb-R, and a stainless barrel from Rock River. And a bullet button. I might spring for a Leupold down the road, but I want to see how I like the SS before I drop the cash.

Hope you all approve, since you made me jealous with all of your toys. I had to join the party.
