Here is the latest group photo. Just waiting for my RRA lower with 2 stage trigger to get out of dros. I am considering a 6.8 build but just can't rationalize it due to having my Savage. If I do it will be either one of the cal guns lowers ten currently has or a ratworx lower. Something a little different.

My only .223 is this mini-14. Bought new in 1992, I've got a lot of rounds down it.

Mike Knifong trigger group and gas block.
Hogue overmolded stock.
John Masen muzzle break
Accu-Strut
A handful of older thermold mags that work great.

Hope to find out this coming weekend. Just got it last week which is what prompted the new photo.

If it does give the barrel some rigidity, it should cut down on fliers. The Hogue stock, Masen break, and trigger work helped.

You guys have a lot of nice looking rifles. I am waiting for my Stag Arms Complete Lower with the U-15 stock. Should be here in about two weeks or less I hope. Now I just have to decide which upper I should get. It will be a 20" barrel for service rifle shooting though. Pictures will be forthcoming.

I went with a "desert" look as I already have a couple "black" rifles and wanted something different. (Painted the grip and A2.) Vulcan carbon-fiber upper (I know; got in it a trade), Stag lower and parts, La Rue QR mount, Aimpoint, DPMS Levang Linear directional brake, Yankee Hill flip-up BUIS, MI handguard, Model 1 oversize mag release, Stag ambi safety, extended rear pin... blah, blah. Hope to get it to the range this week.

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-3/981624/IMGP4011sm.jpg

The MM grip is surprisngly comfortable I dig it. Needed a little work to fit, but no biggie.

I put it together last night and then finished a 20" target model (with BB and pistol grip) this morning. The second build was certainly easier. Will post pics later...

Nice optics. As far as the rifle goes, my setup is pretty much identical to yours, minus the glass. I've been trying to decide which direction to go with that and I may just follow suit. Although I'm a Guile guy myself.

I like the setup, in my mind it cost less than a ACOG plus it has the options of iron sight, 3x with a red dot or a single red dot. :chinese:

The target rifle I put together on Saturday is a Stag lower on a 20" J&T upper (which I got in a trade) and features a Tango Down bipod on a Falcon rail, La Rue QD scope mount, 4-12x Leupold VX-1, ARMS flip-up BUIS, DPMS Miculek brake, Tritium front sight, DPMS magazine, Bullet Button mag lock, Watson extended takedown pin, Stag ambi safety and lower parts kit, Stag tactical buttstock, CAA stock saddle, etc., etc.

That is freakin' saweet superset! I am in the air whether to do a BB or featureless build for an upper I have on order, but if I go BB that is almost exactly the config I'll be doing.

Which magnifier is that? How does it work with the standard EO reticle out to 200 yards?

SuperSet
05-24-2007, 6:09 PM
Prc329 - That's the DNTC compensator, also known as 'I need more hearing protection'. What are you using for your muzzle brake?

LTL - Thanks dude. I just got that LaRue Hensoldt 2.5 magnifier not too long ago and so far, it's been terrific. I wish I could take a picture for you through the magnifier because the glass is very clear considering its low cost. I wrote my impressions on ARFCOM here:

http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=124&t=325419&page=11

Brownie168 - The EOTech 553 has an integral riser so it's a lower 1/3 cowitness. I don't run this setup because I can only flip my BUIS up when the magnifier is flipped to the side (i.e. disengaged). If I have to transition to magnified, I'd have to remember to flip down my BUIS before flipping the magnifier over to 2.5X. Wow, that even sounded complicated typing that out.

http://www.hunt101.com/img/497049.JPG

http://www.hunt101.com/img/497048.JPG

LAR lower receiver,
Fixed, 10 round magazine,
Standard trigger group,
ACE ARFX-E buttstock (short),
Ambidextrous safety (she's a lefty),
RRA Varmint upper with barrel reprofiled from 0.920" down to 0.625" diameter,
CMMG micro gas block assembly,
EOTech rev F sight,

The color variations are not as bad as they appear in the photos.

I have some BUIS iron sights for it but they are not installed. I don't think I will install them, either.

Thanks to Steve at ADCO and the guys at Ammo Brothers.

Please detail;
- butt stock model/ manufacture [ MagPul ?]
- scope and scope platform of the .223 rifle ?
-where do you find the fake cans ?
-which rifle- 9mm or .223- do you enjoy shooting more and why ?

Both are lovely builds, congratulations on a job well done.

i think the dude above covered most the accessories. you can get the fake can direct at www.mfiap.com.

you know, its hard to say which one i like more. i like em both for the reasons that they are different. ones lighter and ones a bit heavier. ones cheaper to shoot and ones more expensive to shoot. one can reach out a bit further while one is good for close up plinking....

ok heres a question...do they make SPR uppers or do you have to make them yourself? if they do sell they a link would be cool.

The 2 most well-known SPR-clone builder on ar15.com is MSTN and ADCO

Somehow MSTN's website is down www.mstn.biz
http://www.ar15.com/lite/topic.html?b=2&f=134&t=141314

Here is ADCO's
http://www.adcofirearms.com/acc/productLine_.cfm?brand=Adco%20Custom&product_category=Complete%20Uppers

I personally liked ADCO(they built mine), since you can either just get a complete SPR-clone upper from them(which uses some very good components: WOA barrel, WOA upper/B/BC/CH, DanielDefence HG, OPS-INC brake), or you can supply them with your own barrel and handguard(if you want it to be as *real* as it can be), and they will put it together for you.

I also think that ADCO is a little cheaper than MSTN.

Nothing against MSTN but I have dealt with ADCO on other things. Great customer service. Steve is a great guy to work with. Buy with confidence. He helped me put this bad bot together, even telling me how to add the feed ramps after I forgot to order the barrel with them.

I bought this thing back in 99 and took it to my dads place in Vegas. Shot about 100 rds through it and decided that it was not comming back with me to cali. However my dad called me up last week and told me to get this thing out of his safe so he can make room. Remembered that it used AR mag release parts so I bought a BB and brought it back this weekend in cali legal form with original 10/20 mag.

hoffmang

The BB requires any tool that is as small or smaller than a .223 round. You use the round to release the magazine latch and then place a newly loaded magazine in as normal. Luckily attachable magazines are not banned.

So, discharging from the truck bed.... is probably.... illegal?

...

(b) Any driver or owner of any vehicle, whether or not the owner of the vehicle is occupying the vehicle, who knowingly permits any other person to discharge any firearm from the vehicle is punishable by imprisonment in the county jail for not more than one year or in state prison for 16 months or two or three years.

Well no not quite. In no way does it have to be registered to use pre ban magazines. The reason that a fixed magazine cannot have a fixed magazine is because it triggers another SB23 status. The whole reason many people buy the Keltec SU-16 is to use their pre ban magazines in a detachable manner.

12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
(2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.

Josh3239
06-15-2007, 8:33 PM
In other words, if you have evil features such as a pistol grip or a flash hider you must fix the magazine. If you fix the magazine it must be 10 rounds maximum.

Or you could go featureless, for example using an AR15 with a fake suppressor and a MonsterMan (no evil features), you can now use detachable magazines. This includes pre-bans.

Wouldn't need to use solvent on it anyway, it's plastic. Rag and water.

How do you like your Magpul 93B ? Easy installation, or something tricky ?
If you had it to do all over again would you choose the 93B ?

What do you mean by, "he got the OK from them [DOJ]"? Is there a letter? If so, could you please post a scan of it?

(These letters are increasingly valuable to the folks doing the OLL legal work)

Do you have a link for Historic Arms LLC? I see references but no direct links.

Len Savage at Historic Arms LLC can be contacted at (706) 675-0818
I don't have a copy of the letter handy, however if you read 12275 PC it only has one evil feature which is the removeable magazine. There is no flash hider (cut back to level with muzzle) , no conspicuous pistol grip (replaced with wooden nub) or any other "bad " features. Although at close to $3000 its not really the chosen weapon of miscreants either. :)

Gotcha. I can see that it's within the letter of the law, but I was looking for an explicit DOJ declaration. If you have the letter, it would be helpful to the Right People (as Mr. Wiese chooses to call them).

I guess I shoudn't have been but I was surprised at how comfortable and natural feeling it was .
I realize I'm way behind the curve as most of you either have one or have experienced one before, but I just wanted to offer my meager +! for the MonsterMan grip, in my opinion a good piece of ergonomics.

I had a friend in NV order the mags for me. I modded them and picked them up on friday. I forgot to take the space taken up by the spring into consideration so these turned out to be 9 round mags. I even made little WARNING: Do not load over 10 rounds or damage will result stickers.

And yes....I made gappers by injecting hot glue into the gap and placing a flat object onto the glue for a good finish. I used a knife to finish the shape. Cheap and effective. I don't get blisters anymore.

Here is my First AR15. It is kind of ugly with the U-15 stock, however, it sure feels ok. Now I have to get myself to the range and it is sighting in time. A complete Stag 15 lower and Stag 4H upper, both from LAN World. Sure was a hard build :D. Push out two pins, attach the upper, push the pins back and I was done. Must of taken all of 10 seconds. Got the stock so I can use detachable magazines and a muzzle brake (no flash hider) :)

HEAVY!

The rifle may be 12-13lb, while the upper itself is at least 8.... very front heavy.... it is MEANT to be used with a front support... you hardly feel ANY recoil or muzzle flip... and even without a muzzle device, you can hardly see ANY flashes....

I've a 24" SS heavy bull barrel.

I have a 24" RRA Bull barrel on one of my lowers. It's very heavy up front but it's made for shooting off a bench and is supported by a bi-pod. No recoil felt and the gun hardly moves when shot. I'm happy with the 24" barrel.

Why thank you! I got a most of it from PK firearms, Denny and the ar15 equipment exchange. I really like PK, you should take a look at their selection. Nice Sabre uppers, and the best selection of bolt carrier groups on the web.

Just need to find me a nice 9v light for the recon so I can move the smaller light to the lightweight build.....

Here's mine, I just put the aimpoint on, I still have to paint it. It's a Spike's Tactical lower, Stag upper, winter triggerguard, the pistolgrip will be changed out for an Ergogrip, the YHM forearm will be swapped out for a MI one, it has a Grip-pod, C-Products SS mag, VLTOR stock, Aimpoint Comp M2, ARMS BUIS, Blackhawk sling, YHM flip up front sight (to be changed for a Troy one), standard A2 flash hider, and soon to have a LaRue mount for my Hellfighter X-15 flashlight. Not the best pics, but the best I have right now!

About the arms rear buis and the yhm front sight on the low gas block rail, do they work together?
I would think it would be shootn' over the barn.

Is that some sort of matched set?

Not trying to be a smartass. I'm looking at purchasing some parts like that and trying to find a solution for that setup.

I also have a tangodown verticle grip, but I like the grip pod for going to the range. I got the YHM front sight that was specific for the gas block height, so when flipped up it sits the same level as the standard fixed sight. It took very few shots to get it zeroed in. Here's a pic of it with the sights flipped up.
http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m305/desertram800/CIMG0523.jpg
Here's the same photo, I put the red line to show that the line of sight is level, also the stock aimpoint mount with spacer is pretty much the perfect height for co-witnessing with the iron sights!

I decided to use an aimpoint comp m2 because that's what I use at work, and the origional purpose of this build was to train with. Train like you fight and fight like you train! The sling is a Blackhawk SWIFT tactical 3 point. It's good, but I'll more than likely be swapping that out for my Spec-Ops Wolf single point, less to get snagged on gear!:p

Got some new toys today, an Ergogrip suregrip, MI flip up front sight, Viking Tactical flashlight mount. The Ergogrip is by far the most comfortable grip I've tried yet! The MI sight is WAAAAYYYY better construction, fit and finish than my YHM one, and the Viking tactical mount places the flashlight perfectly! I wish it was aluminum though, and I wish the color wasn't such a baby diarrhea version of tan! Mounted up my old Digilight 12 volt (4CR123 batteries). Got rid of the grip pod and stuck my old TD vert grip on there, gotta get a tan one of those too.... Anyhow, I have to wait till next payday to get the tan Emod stock! yay!

Uclaplinker,
You have hit the nail on the proverbial head.
The IOR scope is excellent- clear, reliable and the reticle is simply perfect, really something special BUT... it has fairly short eye relief.
The LaRue mount is also an exellent piece of gear, however when I finally settled on the IOR M2 scope I discovered the only way to use the scope effectively is to mount the LaRue backwards to allow proper eye relief.
Oh well, now the system works. In fact I would [still] recommend the IOR M2 to anyone looking for exceptional viewing and repeatable controls. And the reticle is to die for.
Just be prepared to deal with the short eye relief.
Let me pose a question- what scope mount would YOU recommend to replace the LaRue SPR 1.5, knowing what you now know about the IOR M2 short eye relief ?
Anxious to hear your suggestions, and now another pic to keep in spirit with the thread.

Nice looking mount [ you just gotta love LaRue hardware], but a .50 cal scope mount may be a bit over-kill on a .223 rifle. And @ 275.00....:eek::eek:

Just use some rings! Those fancy pants 1 piece mounts are great, but if you don't need to move the optic forward then there is no need. They work just fine, you can get arms or larue QD ones.

From the looks of it, the Armalite one piece scope mount might work well but I can't say for sure.

Someone said .223 porn?

She didn't want to be in the picture so I made her take it off.
My .223 rifle is just a plain rifle compare to some of the rifles in this forum. Keep up the good work and pray for the future Republic of California. Take it F-king back!!!

It looks like IOR actually designed that scope with the AR in mind -- the eye relief looks exactly placed where it should be when mounted with just a ring.

You definitely could not use that Larue he put up. The ring is mounted forward from the edge of the rail. Unless you dumped the BUIS you'd, yet again, be screwed. I would agree with Ryan, you're probably better off just using rings. If you really wanted a quick-release single piece (I really prefer Larue myself, but...) you could do this:

Nice work... having fun shooting them?

Out of curiosity, why did you choose to put the Jewell in the 16" instead of the 20"?
