Been working at this build for a loooong time trying to perfect it. It is still missing the gas system but that is being shipped here. Also missing a bolt, muzzle device and also missing a bolt catch - I want to buy a 1 piece extended one. I struggled to take pics of the optic, they turned out very mediocre. The glass is much nicer than it looks and since it was already a struggle I didn't even bother with the illumination.

This is my first post here ever. I'm in the process of building my first firearm. How are you guys having 10+ rd magazines on your ARs? Aren't they 100% illegal?

This is my first post here ever. I'm in the process of building my first firearm. How are you guys having 10+ rd magazines on your ARs? Aren't they 100% illegal?

In a fixed mag rifle, bullet button or prince 50 mag lock (which most on here are) the mags are required to be no more then 10 rds. In those rifles people use 10/30's, 30 round magazines permanently fixed to hold 10 rounds.

Others owned 10+ round magazines before they were banned and unless they have a RAW (registered assault weapon) they go with a featureless build. No evil features: Pistol grip, forward pistol grip, flash suppressor, folding/collapsible stock, thumbhole stock, grenade/flare launcher. this allows for the use of a detachable mag setup and the use of pre-ban hi-cap mags.

Do some searches you should be able to find a lot more information.

Sorry for the delayed answer but I've been so caught up with other stuff for a couple of months and haven't been on calguns for a while. I also haven't had the chance to get to the range for a long while either which REALLY, REALLY, REALLY SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, as others have mentioned that is Angeles Range and that was probably one of the funnest days I have had at a shooting range in many years! The only thing that wasn't fun was trying to make sure you dried off everything the best you could and get some oil in and on anything that might rust before you pack it all up to go home. Due to the fact that everything was soaked I did end up with a little rust on stupid things like the c-clips for the bubble levels but nothing that couldn't be cleaned up.

But since this is a PIC THREAD here are some pics from that day.

It's good and definitely tones the muzzle rise and recoil down. I polished it with sandpaper as you've probably noticed the shine.

Good price too vs other muzzle brakes. Get one at pkfirearms.com for $40. :)

Here's a pic I posted couple days ago with the new sopmod stock to balance the rifle out better vs the Vltor modstock which was a little too small/unbalanced for it.

Just picked up a Troy MRF-C rail system for my carbine. Its more or less finished now but if I ever get the money (and the balls to fork it over), I might just put a LaRue FUG and a Sopmod stock on it. Until then, we're stuck with this:

Okay, so I'm going to ask a stupid question, and I've been wondering if I got this right. I'm looking for a M4 clone AR-15, and I'm wondering what the exceptions are with 30 round STANAG magazines (besides law enforcement & military). I keep hearing people talk about 10-round mags used for CA legal rifles, and I also hear people say that 30-round mags can be legally used if they are "pre-ban".

What does this mean?

You really need to read and understand all applicable laws before buying an AR so we don't read about you on the news. Doing things correctly and legally will help you stay out of jail.

In order to have a legal ar15 in cali you need to follow the rules. This means:
-having a rifle with all the "evil features" removed and open mag well
-or-
-having a rifle with evil features and a fixed magazine.

You cannot purchase magazines in ca with a capacity over 10 rounds. But if you legally possessed them before 2000 then you may use them in featureless builds(magazines owned before 2000 are referred to as pre-ban). All fixed magazine rifles need to have a magazine with a capacity of 10 or less rounds. If you put a magazine with a higher capacity in a fixed magazine rifle, you have created an assault weapon.

easy fix....use proper head screw to remove pistol grip.....then remove gold block...re-attach pistol grip and shoot burst...

Yes you are correct. It is a limiter, but just as DanHuun says it is a simple screwdriver fix.

Pardon my ignorance. But why would there even be a need for this limiter thing? Is the National Guard just trying to make sure you don't waste ammo?

Thats probably it. We never really seem to get an abundance of ammo even when we qualify. Same goes for the blanks when we do drills. That's alright though I hate cleaning my rifle(especially when they sit you down for a 2-3 hour cleaning session, the less I fire through it the less I have to clean. :)

This device was just recently installed. Within the last 6 months I believe.

How did you do the alternating tan-black-tan on the rail? Is it a Tango Down plastic cover?

Also, how did you keep the markings on the lower receiver black (like where it says "SAFE")?

looks like the upper receiver was originally black and then he had it all duracoated except for the top rails, then painted the selector markings

Yes, that is what I meant. Thank you.

As for the markings, I don't see how you can mask it off prior to applying Duracoat and still make it look neat, clean and "factory". These are small letters and it looks like trying to mask them off would be a pain in the neck. Any ideas?

Pardon my ignorance. But why would there even be a need for this limiter thing? Is the National Guard just trying to make sure you don't waste ammo?

This was done to all CA National guard weapons after the LA Riots. As an agency who routinly interacts with civilians the top Brass thought it was unafe to have weapons that could fire the 3 round burst.

When units deploy to active army missions they are removed (or as we did just broken off the weapon).

This has nothing to do with Budgets/Ammo it is just to keep some 18Yr old kid from firing burst when he is guarding some natural desaster site or airport.

My new M&P 15, born 31 MAY 2009.... not sure on the weight or length but here's the components;

Smith and Wesson M&P 15 lower with RRA parts kit,
Addax Midlength Combat upper w/ Daniel Defense RIS II rails, Vortex flash hider
Troy M4 front sight, Troy rear flip up sight
Magpul MIAD grip, CTR Stock, ASAP sling mount, 10/30 P-Mag, XT and XTM panels
Tangodown QD vertical foregrip
Trijicon TA31F ACOG, though probably be selling it and getting a TA31H when I find one.
PRI Combat tactical latch

Got Sand Colored MS2 Sling and a Surefire G2 in a mount in FDE back in Iraq that I'm going to put on it to when I get it home.

All of my other AR's are just copies of military ones (M4gery, M16A4gery, Model 604gery), this one is my badass go out with a bang because I've got a kid now and can't spend money on toys like this rifle.

DPMS LPK (replaced the janky trigger with a Colt part)
Bushmaster collapsible stock (looking to replace this with a VLTOR soon)
I opted for the BB instead of a P50

Upper Details
DPMS complete upper receiver with 16" 5.56mm H-BAR and quad rail gas block
ProMag flip-up front sight
Double Star quad rail
Streamlight M6 TLI with pressure pad
GG&G vertical grip with battery/spare bolt storage
Trijicon Reflex II 1x optic
Yankee Hill Machining flip-up rear sight
Noveske "SURPRISE C*CK F*G!!" ejection port cover
VTAC LUSA and VTAC Sling

I've assembled a handful of weapons for some buddies in my agency ever since I earned my armorer cert, and I figured it was time to put some time and money into my own. This build was a lot of fun, and I expected to pay a lot more for the parts and pieces of it, but it turns out that being a newly certified armorer has many, many benefits, not the least of which is a discount at Brownell's.

Looks like a nice set up. What side arm are you carrying in that holster if you don't mind me asking.

That's a Glock 22 with an M6 TLI. The M6 isn't the greatest light/laser unit for handguns - it tends to fail after a few hundred rounds. It holds up a lot better on my AR, and my thinking is that the added mass on the long gun takes up a lot of the forces that are applied to the whole setup, whereas there isn't a whole lot of mass on a pistol to help absorb the beating. But what do I know? I'm not physics professor. :p

And the only reason why that thing is still mounted on my sidearm is because I haven't gotten a holster that'll fit my heater without the light. Hell, it doesn't even work, now that I think about it.

Interesting, never seen a variable scope on a duty weapon. Only seen them equipped with Eotechs. How's the 1x mode on that CQ/T? Is it true 1x?

Yeah, it's on the dot, but I don't really like it for shooting on the move; there's still eye relief to account for, although it's not as bad on 1x as it is on 3x. I don't really have a choice, though. Department says, "CQ/T," I say "Okay," then mumble something under my breath about reflex sights. Funny, nobody ever hears me, though. :stuart:

Been dreaming, wanting, scrounging, scratching my eyes out endlessly waiting for the day to get my hands on my own AR15..Today was that day. Of course I live in Montana now and i didn't even need a background check (have a CCW)...paid cash for bushmaster xm15 (yep, banned by name in CA!! Eat that seahag [feinstein]) and 500 rounds of locally made ammo and walked out of the store with it, threw it in my work truck, and finished going on service calls till 5...got it home, checked it out, loaded the 30 round mag, and popped two rounds into the back lawn to test fire. :) Yes, it's everything i ever wanted..and nobody knows about it!!! FREEEEEDOMMMMM!!!

Sure it's plain and simple..but soon there will be an aimpoint and a rear flip up sight, maybe a rail system, and maybe a ctr stock. Who knows..maybe some hello kitty stickers!!

Thanks guys, really happy with them too even though I banged them out super fast, about 30 mins for everything. I just used a single strobe with a 36" soft box on my garage floor, slightly over the stuff at a 45 angle, shot with my Canon 5D and 24-70 lens.

These look amazing at wallpaper size :ninja:

ProfessionalCoyoteHunter, this is for posting pictures. Please make your own thread, also we would have to know what red dot and some specs on the upper. An aimpoint is going more value than say an airsoft red dot knock off.

Old picture, shooting with my cousin in Tucson. That was my first AR, Carbon 15. I actually miss it a lot, it was a darn good rifle and the EO-Tech was lots of fun. I had to use the sights that day since the EO-Tech was having some reticle issues and I couldn't use the high caps because I hand cut the Carbon magwell and it was too tight, it would only accept 10rd mags. Still have the STG though :D

Oh, and just for fun: My HK416 Duty rig with some "just for fun" add-ons. :-P

There's no way in hell I would want to dump this kind of money in a personal AR, but if the department wants to buy them, I don't mind shooting them.

Edit: Shoulder patches removed to maintain anonymity and to avoid OPSEC violations.

----with this set up, i hope criminality in east bay will diminish.

Nice pics aftermath. Maybe I'm just paranoid but I always disguise my serial number. If you care to do this too, you can easily do it in Microsoft paint. Just copy a 0 and paste it over the other numbers.

Here's my 5 second job. If you spend an extra few seconds you can make the numbers line up evenly.

just got the larue stealth upper to finish this bad boy today.
Im thinking i can stick with the a2 stock for now as I have a prs for my varminter.
Scope is a Vortex Crossfire 6-24x50 30 mm tube
Larue quick disc mount
Larue quick disc bipod mount and Harris swivel bipod
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/lcplwan/IMG_0306.jpg

Thats a beauty! I'd swap out stocks though. PRS on this baby, and the A2 on varminter. Just my 2.

I've had a CMMG Lower I've been sitting on since August 2008, placed and order with CMMG for a complete upper in November of 2008. It finally came and I was able to marry the two together as my first K.I.S.S. build.

Nice pics aftermath. Maybe I'm just paranoid but I always disguise my serial number. If you care to do this too, you can easily do it in Microsoft paint. Just copy a 0 and paste it over the other numbers.

Here's my 5 second job. If you spend an extra few seconds you can make the numbers line up evenly.

http://i40.tinypic.com/t9z6ns.jpg

Thanks for the tip, I'm really not that worried about it though.

What camera and lens are you using, Aftermath686?

Nikon D80 and that lens was a Tamron 18-200

Here's a ouple more shots with that lens. Some were taken before the Surefire break and light were mounted:

Since he doesn't have a Monsterman or U15 on there, they'd have to be 10/30s unless these pictres were taken out of state.

Hey Tom, nope this one is for predator pursuit use. Still waiting for my Stag 6H which will be for my long range varmint/target rig. How much does your rifle with scope weigh?

JohnnyRooks

new version of VLTOR CASV carbine. My last concept was really heavy and it no longer fun to shoot. So i made some drastic changes to make it more simple. The UBR stock was changed to CTR with Magpul ASAP end plate for single point sling. The side rails was removed to lighten the front. I did not install any more tac lights since this is not my primary home defense rifle.

Yes 5.5 brake with 10.5
It was just a visual preference for my first AR....wish I could tell you a more technical reason, but just for looks for the first one. It has been fun doing my research through this site, I have learned a heck of a lot just reading and reading about others experiences on here. My next one will be a full on build by myself with a lot higher quality parts. This ones for plinkin up in the hills.........this has been by far the worst addiction (or the best) I have had to date.....and probably the most expensive......but more fun than I can explain!
