View Full Version : What kind of internet speed are you getting on Cox - take the test and post results!

I was not impressed with my internet speed and I had an older cable modem so last night I upgraded to a Motorola Surfboard SB6120. This modem supports DOCSIS 3.0 so I will be ready whenever Cox rolls out support for it. My internet speed is better now, but still not what I expect (I am paying for the 12.5Mbps speed). Below are the results of a speed test I ran on http://www.speedtest.net/

Other Cox internet customers please run the test and post your results for comparison. Just click the "Copy Forum Link" from the results after you run the test and you can paste it in a reply to this thread.

Hmmm, just ran the test again and I got much better results for download, although upload is slightly worse. I wonder why it is so inconsistent - is this common?

I've still got one of those black brick lookin modems, I think it's about 3 or 4 years old now.

My upload speeds vary by about 20% from test to test, and my upload speeds vary by about 50%. Most servers you try to pull data from, will limit your download speeds anyway. There aren't a lot of sites that will feed a 12 mbps stream to your computer.

your results are common. you have to remember you aren't on a line dedicated to just yourself. it could be 10, 100, or 1000 all using the same co-op. you should be within 10% of your bandwidth cap. on dsl its a lot easier to attain the rest of the 10% by forcing it to give you priority over other people for the left over bandwidth.

Can't have it all right?
Found out the computers in the break room are FASTER than the ones we use during work....maybe different network or less people on them at this time. Either way I really don't notice a difference.....of course I usually use this computer instead of my home computer.

My internet speed keeps coming and going - have a tech coming out again today to take another look at it. If I can't get better, consistent speed I am going to look at dumping Cox. Any recommendations for Orange County?

BTW, this is what I get from the office on AT&T which is 2 miles from the house (obviously not std residential cable service):

Actually that's not true...I hate AT&T (formerly SBC) for not giving a rats ***** about their customers in this portion of Los Angeles.
Yes, not somewhere in the sticks, Los Angeles ! No U-verse (spelled Up-Urs here) in the works or planned for this area. Basically just saying to us "too bad for you !!!" and laughing at us.
Turner cable or Comcast are the only other options and (being a cheap basta**) I'm not paying 150 bucks a month for internet service that should be free for everyone anyway. (oops another mini-rant)

My apologies. This subject really gets to me, especially when friends send me stuff - or people post stuff - from YouTube and the like and I can't watch 'em.....unless I want to spend 5 hours downloading/buffering/downloading/buffering ....to watch a simple 4 minute vid. Had to return the Apple TV and cancel Netflix too. All we'd get is that buffering circle spinning for hours.

The people that are getting very low rates should test without their router. Many older routers are bandwidth limited and just cannot handle high speeds. Especially the ones that have statefull packet inspection. Also, if you are getting less than you are paying for, call your ISP to make sure they have your bandwidth set correctly. If your modem is getting a good signal (check at 192.168.100.1) then there is no reason why you shouldn't get the bandwidth you pay for.

Time Warner if you can get it. I have their cable at home and get about 34/5

We have 10/10 cable at work and a scalable 10gig fiber line with Time Warner. Can't complain so far.
