View Full Version : Question on Barrett 82A1CAL

I have a registered Barrett 82A1CAL. This is the California model that has
the permanent attached swing down 10 round magazine. My question is since
it's a registered CA AW, can I convert it to the regular 10 round detachable magazine?

No. That is a registered .50 cal assault weapon, not a registered SB23 assault weapon.

Yes. Remove the PG and install an MMG or a Solar Tactical grip.

I do not believe you reg'd your M82CA as an assault weapon (unless it existed before & you registered it on or before Dec 31, 2000).
I believe you registered this gun with DOJ as a 50BMG rifle in ~2004 time frame; the DOJ-approved "-CA" model with swing-bail magazine was designed to avoid SB23 assault weapon status before the AB50 50BMG ban came down.
Even though you are reg'd with DOJ, the 50BMG category does not allow AW status. You have to keep the 10rd fixed magazine unless you can come up with some Bullet-Button style device or use something like a MonsterMan grip (and have no flash hider, folder stock, or other evil features).
[N.B.: the converse, however, is true: if you have a registered AW, it can have 50BMG status. A specific exemption in the law says reregistration of reg'd AWs was not required for 50BMG status.]

I have one too. Short answer: NO.
