View Full Version : We NEED At Least 50 Well-Dressed Calgunners for the 2/16 Oakland City Council Meeting

Mods, please do not move this into the "local" forum, as it will not get the exposure that it needs. Please leave it here.

ETA: Some have suggested (half in jest) that we wear "cone heads or dunce caps." This was in response to a statement made by the City Attorney that gun owners are pointy headed intellectuals. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS. The TV cameras are located on the other side of the room, and when they pan across the gallery, all they will see will be a bunch of people who look like Klansmen from a distance. This will pretty much cancel out anything positive that we may gain by our appearance at the City Council meeting, and may even have negative effects on the potential litigation. This is the type of image and video that would go viral in a heartbeat, SO DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.

FOLKS - PLEASE VOTE IN THE POLL.

We need at least 50 well-dressed Calgunners for the Oakland City Council Meeting that is coming up on 2/16/2010.

DATE, TIME AND LOCATION

6PM on 2/16/2010 at Council Chambers, 3rd Floor, Oakland City Hall.

1 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza,
Oakland, CA 94612
between 14th and 15th Streets
at Clay Street.

AGENDA

The agenda is here:
http://clerkwebsvr1.oaklandnet.com/meetings/2010/2/5894_A_Concurrent_Meeting_of_the_Oakland_Redevelop ment_Agency___City_Council_10-02-16_Meeting_Agenda.pdf

SPEAKER CARDS

You MUST get a speaker card to speak, you can get one at the meeting, or online: http://www.oaklandnet.com/cityclerk/speaker_instructions.htm

PARKING

At about 5:30, plenty of street parking becomes available, and the meters only operate until 6pm. There is also a parking lot in the area.

DRESS

This event WILL be taped by local (and possibly national) media. Therefore, you MUST wear at least a dress shirt and a tie. Do not wear camo. Do not wear "gun" t-shirts, or anything provocative. Our objective is to look like the safe and law abiding citizens that we are. At the last meeting, the Brady's showed up wearing matching "Brady" t-shirts and looked like kooks when the local TV crews panned over the audience.

PRESS RULES

Please do not talk to the press. They may and try and corner you either on the way in, or the way out. Any contacts with the press must be coordinated with NRA/CGF. Without interviewing you, they may ask you which organizations you are a member or, or which organizations you are representing. The correct answer is ALWAYS, "I am here as a concerned citizen."

IF YOU SPEAK BEFORE THE COUNCIL

Keep your message short, to the point, and respectful. Your speech is taped by the city, and is available on their website about 3 days after the meeting. Local reporters often troll those speeches to look for juicy quotes on controversial topics.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT IF THESE LAWS ARE JUST GOING TO BE RUBBER STAMPED?

99 percent of politics is theater. By having a strong turnout at this meeting, we will be letting the City Council know that they lack popular support for these measures. We will also be letting the media know that the grassroots gun community is strong and cohesive. This sends a strong message to other city governments that the gun rights community is not just going to roll over when local governments try and take away our rights!

ETA: SINCE THIS IS SO IMPORTANT, IF ANYTHING COMES UP AND YOU NEED TO SPEAK TO ME PERSONALLY, PLEASE CALL MY PERSONAL CELL AT 415.827.1776.

Since I live in a rough area, I generally dress down all the time. This means jeans, a white t-shirt, and a motorcycle jacket and beanie.

I actually put on a sport coat and a tie when I spoke earlier this week at the LAST meeting, and looked very presentable. . .

See http://oakland.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=2&clip_id=599 at about 33 minutes in.

This will be going out in an EMAIL BLAST to all Calgunners. . .

Maybe we will get 100 Calgunners, and overflow the meeting room?

How cool would that be???

Oak,
that would be awesome to have a huge amount of calgunners there.
Me coming depends on if I have work or not.

On a side note, the 16th is Mardi Gras, so bring your beads!!

Is there likely to be a way to easily duck out by about 9 PM preferably earlier? Last train to Davis is at 9:47 from the Oakland station...I'm currently working out logistics on this and it looks like the 16th and 17th is going to be quite the dance if it will work at all. O_O

There's another benefit to this: Warning the City Council that we won't go quietly. That every time they come up with one of these poorly crafted and unconstitutional measures, we'll be there to hold their feet to the fire. We'll be there to litigate these actions. We'll be there to bring scrutiny on the morons that actually think that they can get away with this.

Look folks, 99% of winning is simply showing up. It's not that hard. Wear a dress shirt and tie, sit in the audience. Speak if you're so inclined. Let them know that you're concerned, that you have the balls to get involved.... The Calguns Foundation does a great job of running interference for us - but we have to do something, too.

Get involved. Fight these bastards. Make them pay for every inch of ground.

To steal (and butcher) a common phrase, We Can't Win, Unless YOU Play.

Thanks for the link to the council meeting.

I saw one guy had 12 cards and he was allowed to talk forever.

We should consider that tactic, as our effectiveness was impeded by the time constraint placed on us.

If I'm not fishing a tournament or shooting a match (I have to check the master calendar) I'd be interested just to meet all of you. I enjoy how Calguns keeps me current on the guns laws.

Would this be a good excuse to go to a late dinner/coffee afterwards with all of you?

If I can convince my husband to wear a tie, I'm sure I can find my heels somewhere... lol

LOL - I hate polls with too many questions. Here, all I am concerned about is whether you are coming or not. I realize that many of us are completely on the other side of the state, but I do urge ALL local Calgunners to take 2 hours out of their week to attend this.

Guns rights grass-roots action is composed of the following:

1) Direct Action
2) Monetary Contributions to Gun Rights groups
3) Email, phone and fax communications with politicians, and policy makers
4) Grass roots education of fellow shooters and non-shooters
5) Other things

Here, there are many of you who have done items 2-5 - but few (percentage-wise) who have done item #1. This is your chance to get your feet wet!!!

I told my husband that I'd buy him dinner if we show up. I have almost 200 hours of PTO, so I think they can spare me at the office for a couple of hours.

Wut? We're having a clan meeting?

oaklander
02-05-2010, 10:15 PM
If by "clan" you mean a diverse group of law abiding gun owners from various ethnic and racial backgrounds, why yes!

The ONE stereotype that I absolutely HATE is that gun owners are a bunch of rednecks!!!

If Calguns is any indication, we are an extraordinarily diverse group of people who hail from multiple religious, ethnic, racial, political, and socio-economic backgrounds.

I would really like the cameras to see that on 2/16/2010.

Wut? We're having a clan meeting?

A good strategy, for City Council meetings that draw random speaker cards, is to pack the meeting with supporters, and have each person request to speak. Then, if called upon to speak, they turn over their alloted time to one or more pre-selected spokesmen. This helps focus your message on a clearly-written prepared message.

My wife and I are planning on attending this Oakland city council meeting.
Not sure if I am doing this right to post a photo but we will see. Our fast draw club is very active in our town. We host competitions and gunslinger alley's that allow the public to try our sport during street fairs, county fairs and any public gatherings we can get into.

This is a photo of one of the many times that we have attended our local city council meetings with our 45's strapped on. And yes, we are in our underware. Lots of fun!

Thank you, I think. 3 years ago we put on the Henry Miler Wild West Weekend in conjuction with our cities centennial. The city gave us some money for it and once a month we went in to give an update on the event. Since the California Cowboy Fast Draw State Championships was the main event, we wanted to go in period correct attire. One of the side attractions was the bath tub races. That explaines the underware and guns, I hope!

According to the city hall web site City Hall is BART accessible – strongly recommended:
When using BART – exit the 12th Street City Center station. Use the Frank H. Ogawa Plaza exit. City Hall will be on your left when entering the Plaza.
Not that it's likely to be an issue, but remember BART closes the gates for entry at midnight. (You can still get out!)

My new avatar is the "simplified" CGF graffiti logo in honor of Oakland so that they will understand our logo.

OCDO is going to get some people too. I would be overjoyed if we could get more than 100 people. I actually think it's possible now!!!

Re: speakers - the message is being coordinated right now. . .

Oak I just watched you speak and it pumped me up to come over... Did that lady ask that one guy if he had a speaker card because he mention the other city he spoke at? Just curious.

It made me sick to here the antis speak... WHY do they not get that guns laws ONLY stop LAW ABIDING citizens... It is a SUPER simple concept and these people play to teh idea that they are SMART.

Bad guys and BAD girls WILL ALWAYS do bad and get stuff to use for doing bad. We need to ensure we are armed for so many reasons and guns laws only hurt us.

Ahhh it hurts to have to even speak or type something that take no brains at all.

She didn't ask any of the Bradys!

The bottom line is that the City Council's ONLY job is to get reelected.

I just called Oaklander to tell him that my wife and I will be there. With the additional story about East Palo Alto hitting the web, we cannot, willnot, miss this event.

I am going to set up a Open Carry lunch at one of our local BBQ restuarants here in Los Banos in March. Probably the first or second weekend. You can come down and shoot Cowboy fast draw in the morning and then we can break for lunch around 1pm.

I will clear it with the local PD even though I don't have too. We OC all of the time anyway.

Come join the fun!

Send me a pm and I will give you the details.

Got a speaker card confirmed for anyone who wants the extra time. I read the agenda; a few questions.

Item 1 says "To Enhance Existing Permit Requirements Pertaining
To The Sale Of Firearms And Ammunition In Oakland" but how does it "enhance" ? I'm sure enhance means restrict.

Item 2 says to remove Registry so as not to dupe AB962, isn't that good so when 962 goes away, Oakland doesn't have a city thing ?

Item 2 also says "Require Ammunition Purchasers To Submit A Thumbprint Along With Other Required Proof Of Identity". Would that be stricken when 962 dies ?

Item 3 is to report stolen guns, isn't that good as they are working on bad people getting guns rather than the gun itself ?

Looking for English (instead of "makes my eyes bleed" legaleeze; no offense to CGF)

Please join Oaklander, et al. and attend this meeting if you are able. If Oakland is going to ignore the law and the will of the people, we need to make it as difficult as possible for them to do so. If you are unable to attend, please make your voice heard with an e-mail. Cal-NRA has made it very easy, all you have to do is visit: http://calnra.com/legs.shtml#contactinfo, just scroll down to the bottom of the page and utilize the “ONE-CLICK” feature to send e-mails to all the members of the Oakland City Council. It takes one minute.

We posted an article on www.calgunlaws.com urging people to attend and/or send an e-mail through the Cal-NRA website. We also linked this discussion for people who want to attend to be able to coordinate with you all here.

For those who want to know the legal arguments against these ordinances better, Michel & Associates, PC submitted a very detailed letter on behalf of the NRA explaining why each provision (and the aggregate effect thereof) is unlawful. That letter is still available at: http://www.calgunlaws.com/images/stories/Docs/02.01.10_OaklandLetters/02.02.10%20opposition%20letter%20to%20proposed%20o rdinance%20regulating%20firearm%20dealers%20and%20 ammunition%20vendors.pdf

FYI, the ONE-CLICK system assembles all the email addresses for all city council members, the mayor and anyone else we think needs the information, then provides a single email address through which your one email can be sent to all those folks. Dear Mayor and Council Members,

I am against Oakland's proposed gun control ordinances. Gun control does not work. Oakland has one of the highest crime rates of any city, and yet already has draconian gun control. Since these proposed laws will likely result in litigation against the City of Oakland, I urge you to vote against them, and use the money you save for social programs instead.

Almost exactly what I wrote. Lol.

Please don't pass your new gun control schemes. You have a monumental failure in your city of keeping guns away from criminals. Attempting to keep them hard to get for the people who actually obey the laws is absurd. Don't forget, all of these laws are preempted by state laws. You will have to pay an expensive lawyer to defend them in court, where they will fall. Follow the lead of Richmond and drop the subject while it's still cheap.

Thank You

Mike, I'll again suggest that shaming this community into action is probably only mildly effective, at best. As seen by the tally, even NRA MC members haven't done much through one-click. Maybe the tool is less useful with the technology accessible to today's gunnie, maybe the means of delivery/marketing is simply ineffective. Regardless, I'd like to see more messages myself but feel that we can do a better job as leaders. This community makes things happen often- to judge them based on one-click utilization (again) is shortsighted and fails to address the flaws in the current one-click model.

I won't be able to make the meeting (and would probably look like a dork even if I did show up dressed properly), but I did send email using the "one click" link. The letter I sent is here: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showpost.php?p=3812141&postcount=42

Please feel free to use any or all arguments from that letter during your oral presentations (assuming that any of them are suitable for such a purpose...).

I'm thinking the fine print of $19.95 stops people in their tracks, they stop reading and close the window ...
FYI, the ONE-CLICK system assembles all the email addresses for all city council members, the mayor and anyone else we think needs the information, then provides a single email address through which your one email can be sent to all those folks. Don't know how to make it any easier and still get this much bang for 30 seconds worth of work.

FYI, history of ONE-CLICks sent to Oakland...
01/29 - Posted info about Oakland's plans, setup ONE-CLICK service, posted alert on Calguns, Forum Army, etc
01/30 - 1 email (first one on NEXT DAY?)
01/31 - 2 emails
02/01 - 6 emails
02/02 - 6 emails
02/03 - 1 email
02/04 - 1 email
02/05 - 1 email
...
02/12 - 3 emails
02/13 - 3 emails
...
02/15 - 1 email
-----------------
Total - 25

Shame, really.

Folks, you heard Mike above.

Especially if you're not attending (and even if you are) get those emails and letters in and you can use the One-Click CA NRA website to do this:

OAKLAND CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER GUN CONTROL ORDINANCES (http://calnra.com/legs.shtml?year=2010&summary=oaklandord)

Send a One-Click Email to the Oakland CIty Council (http://calnra.com/legs.shtml#oneclick)

Yup!

Everyone - and I don't care if you are speaking or not - please go to:

Oakland City Council Speaker Instructions (http://www.oaklandnet.com/cityclerk/speaker_instructions.htm)

Read the instructions
Click "Continue" at the bottom of the page.
Fill out the form
Enter "10.4-CC" as the agenda item
Press "Submit"
Print out the receipt and bring it to the meeting.

Note that only three fields are required.

Dew it!!!

Even if you will not be able to attend please consider doing the following:

Send an email to the Oakland City Council using the CALNRA One-Click Email above.
Register for a speaker card and pm the confirmation number to oaklander

*Note: You do not have to use your real name on the form if you're concerned about it being on the public record. You can use "concerned citizen" or any other generic name but you do have to provide a valid email address.

Folks there is a lot on the agenda this evening. lets get there a little early so we can get seated. No point in standing around outside having made the effort to get there.

This is a good time to save seats if you're there before the rest of us coming from Napa and Solano Counties. Much appreciation!

However, I will try to run as fast I can in heels and not fall down, twisting an ankle like the nimrods in monster flicks - lol

With all due respect, Mike... As much as I like the NRA - ILA has me in a bit of a snit. And you can kick that up to HQ.
You kick it up to HQ. I'm busy fighting gun control in Oakland.

Mike, I'll again suggest that shaming this community into action is probably only mildly effective, at best...
I'm simply posting ONE-CLICK email numbers. If you feel shame as a result, look inside your own soul because I'm too busy.

All I know is, the number of ONE-CLICKs to the Oakland City Council has increased by 200% (is now 72) over where it was when I posted 24 hours ago and there's a hearing tonight. Yeah, it should be MUCH more (in the hundreds if not thousands), but it's better than it was.

Simply say something like:

Dear Mayor and Council Members,

I am against Oakland's proposed gun control ordinances. Gun control does not work. Oakland has one of the highest crime rates of any city, and yet already has draconian gun control. Since these proposed laws will likely result in litigation against the City of Oakland, I urge you to vote against them, and use the money you save for social programs instead.
Excellent letter. Absolutely right - don't spend too much time on it or worry about sounding "scholarly" (but don't be rude). They're too arrogant to care much about what you say past "SUPPORT" or "OPPOSE" (and you're lucky if they do that.) If you use the words "Constitution" or "Second Amendment", sad to say, you'll only make their eyes glaze over.

Let Chuck Michel and his crew handle the legal details - we're there to backup NRA and provide VOLUME.

Mike,

You'll understand when I really feel less than sympathetic that your tools are failing to see much use. It's called obsolescence. Did you plan for it?

If NRA One-Click was even relatively valuable to the market, why do you suppose that it consistently sits idle? I have no trouble mobilizing over a thousand volunteers throughout the state, over 375 donors in a week's time (between Christmas and New Years, no less), creating, printing and distributing nearly 100,000 pieces of information in ~2 weeks... this community steps up and makes things happen on a very regular basis. What inhibits Cal-NRA from mobilizing even its own MC membership to use it's (simple, easy and quick) One-Click system? Is it possible that a) the leadership isn't effective, b) the tool isn't in demand or c) some combination of both?

At some point, you're going to have to ask the tougher questions. For now, I'll let you think a little about the implications of the above; the next round won't be as guarded.

I'm going to ask you one more time - please do not make inaccurate, shortsighted and inflammatory comments about our membership. They do not deserve your words or your tone. Are we clear?

I want to help you, and I will continue to support NRA's efforts (that is, unless it starts pulling an NRA-ILA- that's my new euphemism for "dumbass"). Again, let's do our jobs as leaders and stop pointing the finger at the troops for our own misgivings.

To OCC, <unprintable>

OCC says: "you Calgunners are finally finished (even after we chopped your speaking time down 2/3'rds) ... those in favor, passed"

Whoever took the pic of the sleeping council member, can you post it please ?

Who was that reporter ... I'd sure like to read his column from tonight ...

It was a great turnout. I got home around 12:30 then stayed up to read ALL of the posts. We attend all of our city council meetings here in Los Banos and have been dissapointed at some times. I could not believe how rude the Oakland council was. There were 6 of them, 3 pairs, talking to each other and one old women fell asleep and had to be nudged back to life. I was waiting for her to start snoring.

Like our council on some points, they had their minds made up long ago and nothing anybody said would have changed their minds. It will be great after they spend their money on att's and we can say "We told you so"!

Thanks to everyone for showing up. We will win.

That's what they seem to forget, the voters. My coworker said he gets the same treatment when he attends the St. Helena council meetings. They structure their meetings to be drawn out, hoping the people who want to speak leave.

Thanks again to everyone who was able to stay.
