Hutchens leads sheriff’s campaign fund-raising

Appointed Sheriff Sandra Hutchens is rolling out the heavy artillery in her election effort. Hutchens has raised $301,971 for her war chest - about five times more than her two contenders, according to campaign disclosures made public this week.

Records show that she has spent $148,235, again outpacing by far challengers Anaheim deputy chief Craig Hunter and former sheriff’s lieutenant Bill Hunt. Is this a surprise? Not really. Hutchens is the incumbent and has instant credibility among high-end donors.

The next highest, so far, is Hunter, with $58,721 raised - $17,500 in a loan to himself - and $27,409 spent. Included in Hunter’s revenue is a $1,600 check from attorney Michael Schroeder, who was legal and political adviser to criminally convicted ex-sheriff Mike Carona.

Following close behind is Hunt, with $57,351 in revenue and $35,183 in expenses.

The unions have not yet weighed in, but they represent some big money and heavy volunteer time. Hunter, however, took the Scott Baugh-inspired pledge not to accept union money. That leaves Hutchens and Hunt in the running for labor endorsements.

Tim Clark, spokesman for Hunter’s campaign, said his candidate was happy with his fund-raising momentum and expected to soon shift into high gear. Clark also said he was surprised that Hutchens had not collected more, being the sitting sheriff.

“We may, in fact, out raise the sheriff by the time we’re done,” Clark said.

Total Buzz was still trying Wednesday evening to reach spokesmen for Hutchens and Hunt.

About a 14% increase in part one crimes between 2008 vs 2009 in contract cities patrolled by OCSD. That may be the economy or that may be the Deputies are afraid to do proactive work because of the Hutchens administration.

The stats are available at www.ocsd.org

Hunter might want to focus on his own Agency right now.
