Hey guys. I went to the Costa Mesa gun show to look for some Kar98's. I saw plenty but the problem is that I was unsure about them. I need to know if there is a list on the web of the markings on the rifles and stamps with descriptions. I am going to go to borders to look for a book on this cause im going to buy a kar98 at the next gun show and i dont want to shell out 300 bucks on a partially authentic rifle.

If you have anything to help me with then that would be awesome. Thanks

I don't know about 'net info, but this is the bible and starting point for all basic information about the k98K:

http://www.amazon.com/Backbone-Whermacht-German-Rifle-1934-45/dp/0889351023

Backbone of the Whermacht German K98K Rifle, 1934-45.

Buy this book and read cover to cover a couple of times before starting out collecting the k98K.

Read this thread http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=243073 then if you have any more specific questions post them in the Curio & Relic/Black Powder forum.

I think the big thing is to decide what you're looking for. There are various levels to the k98.

Cheapest (~$300-400) are the current russian captures which have mismatched parts and could have some of the nazi symbols punched out, but would serve the purposes if you're looking in that price range for a shooter.

Expect to pay a lot more for something with more matching parts or like a bring back k98.

If you're just looking for a shooter you might want to try here:

$300 is about the lowest you can get a "partially authentic" rifle for these days. Russian captured/refurbed K98's are selling between $300 and $400 now.
