View Full Version : E. Camino Cielo Glass Factory RANGE CLEAN UP! JOIN US!

Myself and a buddy recently stopped at "The Glass Factory" on E. Camino Cielo off Highway 154 for our first time. What a great place! However... it was extremely dirty, IMO. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of a range like that and would like to be able to continue the trek down there in the future - but am worried that if the ranges dont stay clean we may lose our access to them.

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r58/SandInspiredKustomz/86bcc627.jpg

Who would be interested in meeting out there on a Saturday or Sunday and spending an hour or two doing doing some clean up, then some shooting?

I was thinking Saturday, January 30th. Does that work for people? I think if we can get at least 10 or 15 people together we can get that whole place spotless.

DIRECTIONS TO THE RANGE: (Edit Point A to your start location): http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=santa%20barbara&daddr=34.5060111111%2C-119.75331048%20%28%22Glass%20Factory%22%29&ie=utf-8&v=2.1&cv=4.1.7076.4458&hl=en

Its an hour and a half drive for myself, so no excuses for people! Carpool, whatever! If anyone more local has access to a trailer or at least a truckbed to haul out trashbags full of brass/trash/whatever, that would be great. I can bring tons of trashbags along with a handful of hand tools Itd be great if all could bring a shovel and/or rake along with a few trashbags. Truck/trailer space would be great for the few shot up TVs, an old propane tank, sheet of plywood, etc.

Not sure what other ideas the group could come up with, but Im sure they would be good ones. Whos in, and does that date work for you?

I want to help keep E. Camino Cielo Glass Factory Range Open!:

I'm in...

1. How are we going to time it so that no other shooters from outside the group don't get shafted because we're down range with rakes and shovels for hours?

2. Where are we going to dump the trash when we trek it down the mountain?

SikDMAX
01-18-2010, 8:47 AM
Thanks Hopi!

Well, this would be 3 Saturdays from now. If these crazy rains stop for next weekend, I was thinking of maybe going out Sunday and posting a few signs that there would be an upcoming range cleanup, open to the public etc etc.

I am going to contact the FS and see if they have a roll off dumpster or place on site where we can dispose of the garbage - otherwise I will bring a 20ft. trailer and haul it back north to San Luis Obispo and to the dump if no one else can do it more locally.

Thanks for the input! WHO ELSE?

Just an FYI, the Appleseed shoot for Santa Barbara is the same weekend as your scheduled weekend, so a lot of us Calgunners (including me) would be preoccupied with this event.

I would probably be down for helping if it's on another weekend, but that all depends on midterms for me (UCSB student).

Re: being downrange with rakes and shovels - how about early in the morning ( like 8am) or close to sun down?

GREAT!

I was thinking we meet at 9am on Saturday, Jan 30th. That will give anyone who has a bit of a drive (LIKE ME! :D Hour and a half) ample time to get there.

When I was there last weekend, there were about 25 of us on the range, and all it took was a new guy to come up to us and say Hey, mind if we stop for a minute so we can place some targets?

It went on down the line, everyone stopped shooting, ear protection off, lots of verbal confirmations and then everyone went out for about 15 minutes. Once people realized no one was down range, lots more verbal confirmation everyone was ready and we commenced.

I think if we put in about 2 solid hours with 10+ guys - that place would be spotless!

Then, do some shooting and general BSing, clean up our little mess we made and head out!

When I have some time possibly today Id like to come up with a few sentences I could print up on a couple signs to take out there to post this weekend - letting people know of the range cleanup next weekend, and to come and join!

Also this would let people know that perhaps there wouldnt be shooting going on for a couple of hours that morning. I dont think it would be an issue.

Thoughts everyone?

re: Hauling capacity.

My only car ( sold the mrs' to cut insurance and maintenance costs) is a Hyundia Santa Fe - but i do have a hitch receiver and a tail gate carrier ( no wheels, 500lb capacity thingy)

between the hitch carrier and the back, i could probably swing 4 garbage cans if needed.

mjukins thanks so much! We will see you there! Stay tuned to this thread as more info is posted.

And yup - that google map is it. At the top of 154, turn East onto East Camino Cielo, then head out about 6.2 miles. Youll go about 4 miles and see Painted Cave road, continue about 2 more and you will see the range. Cant miss it. Last time was my first time there - I had these instructions and I was a little apprehensive, then I got there and LOLed because it really was that simple.

SIKDMAX- Great idea for the cleanup....but I think you might be more successful if you fixed your directions/map. I looked at the map and that's nowhere near the Arroyo Burro Range on Camino Cielo., that's map shows some side street down in the foothills I believe. Go way further up the pass and way further over towards gibralter resevoir. Good Luck! :punk:

Myself and a buddy took 2 rakes and managed to rake most of the parking area of the mainsection. Also did between the rocks and then a few yards into the range more towards the north side.

Hauled out about 10 huge trashbags full and feel like we made a small dent in it! It will be interesting to see how the area looks in a week.

We will definitely need a few truckbeds or trailers for the TVs, etc large items. If we don't have room, we can at least pile it all up. BRING GLOVES.

If I recall correctly, there have been closure signs sitting alongside the road at the Painted Cave intersection for a couple of years. Still, a bit of caution would be prudent.

I um.... just went on right past the ROAD CLOSED barricades in the road LOL.

There was one in the road, one off to the side turned sideways. There is a permanent sign saying road closed 9 miles ahead - so if I was going to have trouble I was just gonna say I thought it referred to that and roll out.

There were 2 other people (cars) shooting at the range who both came and went, and several vehicles driving by while we were there for 2 hours.

We also had a little encounter with a USFS LEO when I was coming down the hill in the road closed area.... maybe a bit too quickly havin some fun haha. I knew he was going to say something, so being the great citizen I am I beat him to the punch and waved him down :D

I alerted him to what we were doing and he seemed much at ease and thanked us.... and then asked me if I would put my seatbelt on hahaha.

So anyway, no issues with road closed. There was snow on the sides of the road and water runoff from that so be careful, but no issues.

To the newcomers to the thread - thank you and we will see you there!

Boy..... 13 people confirmed so far... thats great!

I bought a few of the plastic rakes at Home Depot that are on sale for $5.97 each and they work great! Also, they have the Yellow/Red/Black boxes of 32 contractors bags 3 mil (THICK) for $16 I think.... these two items would be great to pick up if a few can.

Ill try to grab a few extra rakes and another box or two of bags.

From my experience out there yesterday - it will be most effecient if some people have rakes and rake trash into piles, and others work with a shovel and bag individually or in teams to load the bags, tie them off and carry them to the staging area. Im pretty sure I will be bringing a 12 foot trailer and may have a truckbed as well.

If at least 1 other person can bring a trailer that would be awesome, along with a couple of truckbeds.

Saturday
9am SHARP

we clean till about 10am when people start showing up, and we reserve the bench and some range space for us. We pass out the cards I'm bringing for all attendees, tell them what Cal Guns is doing for their 2nd amendment rights

let them shoot for a while then every "cease fire" we do some quick clean up

Cease fires usually last about 10-15min, we make them last 15-20 min and clean up in between and do general PR stuff

i think it will go over great ! :D

still in for 9am Saturday.

There are really two distinct sections of the range, let's call them 'right' and 'left'....the left section is usually the last place to fill with shooters and kind of faces a different direction than the other section (meaning we could probably clean that section while shooters are active in the other section), we could always move left-right.....

Also - its a very friendly range!

everyone is always smiling and happy to say hi and "nice <insert gun here>!!!"

there are a lot of father son / families that go up too

superdave474

Does anyone have a plan for disposing of the trash? I don't suppose the county will let someone drop it at the transfer station since there is a high likelyhood of there being live rounds mixed in with it..

alexander
01-29-2010, 11:38 AM
I'm fairly certain if we coordinate with the Rangers, we can leave the trash there and they'll have it hauled out. If anyone knows better, speak up.

I just called the Ranger's office, but the secretary didn't have an answer. I was told I'd get a call back from a ranger about it.

I got my man thats printing the cheap Cal cards (btw - free is free, so the quality might not be the best lol ) to print up 100x 8x11 targets as well.

As for a hanger - i've got 2 lengths of galvanized conduit tubing i just drive into the ground w/ a mallet and use some tape. Not the greatest thing ever but it works.

I could take some 2x4s i have lying around, and put some nails in em and make it so you just have the 2 bars running horizontal....

hey thats a great idea

superdave474
01-29-2010, 1:46 PM
PVC makes great frames, and you zip tie a piece of cardboard in the center to staple targets to. They are cheap and easy to make, so in the event someone (not me) misses the target and hits the frame, its not a huge loss. I'll see if I've got enough 1/2 inch laying around. Anyone have a couple of pieces of rebar we can drive into the ground to stand them up?

Monthly is super ambitious, but if we can swing it even once every 6 or 8 weeks each successive trip up will require less effort.

BTW, everybody in this thread should click on the link in my signature and check in! Checking in does not automatically sign you up for participation, but will give us the chance to hound you for help in other events! ;)

Awesome job....it's always refreshing to see that place looking good.

Did you guys make an agreement for the ranger to have all that trash hauled out?

I have not heard back from the member who said they contact rangers. Anyone?

I purchased www.SBGlassFactory.com/.org/.net/.info this morning and I will be adding pictures, info and upcoming events to it this evening.

That way it will be easy for everyone to keep track of whats going on!

I have a complaint with those photos. You made me look old and fat.

Of course, the fact that I AM old and fat has nothing to do with it.... nothing at all. :)

It was awesome!

I loved how there was 2 then 3 then 4 then like 26 people all working away.

Great job all.

We should BBQ next time!

I was out at the Glass Factory in the early, misty hours of this morning. The trash pile is still there, and the range itself once again looks like the aftermath of an exploded trash compactor. Some of the larger items (like the surfboard) which had been carried to the pile are now once again fixtures out on the range. Someone has also added an exercycle... I guess someone gave up early on their New Years resolution :P

Tried to pick up what I could before we started shooting, but it was very wet and visibility was extremely limited (couldn't see the first "hump" from the firing line) so we didn't want to be wandering around downrange.

Bummer...... that is what I was afraid may happen. Looks like Ill be heading out with a trailer and truck this weekend to haul out. I will post up a few days prior if anyone wants to meet up with me to do a little shooting and help me load.

Thats ok.... Glass Factory clean n shoots will become a regular thing! :D

Anybody heading out on this weekend? I was planning on Sat morning but the weather doesn't seem to be cooperating. When is the next clean up? I would be up for helping out. I've also got a truck that we could use to get rid of some of the trash bags.

I went to the glass factory today, and was in the best shape I have ever seen it. There was of course lots of little ****, like broken clays and stuff on the ground, but barely any large items. I could really tell you guys had been there in the last month. Congrats on the good effort.

I went out on Saturday morning to some really thick fog. Luckily it cleared up around 10am just to find that the area is really dirty and in need of a clean up. I brought a couple bags with me and since the pile from the first cleanup is still there, I tossed another 5 or 6 bags in the back of my truck.

I got to meet Deadbolt while we were out there. Really fun time.

Lets schedule another cleanup before that place gets closed.

I also took a ride out to Figueroa mountain after we were done. That place is getting really dirty as well. I saw a bunch of guys out there setting up targets and when we drove back by they were all gone with all the cardboard and garbage still there.

Anyways lets plan another cleanup.

Did you see some jerk there with a tan plate carrier, driving a Volvo?

Was it a Volvo SUV? If that was you I was right next to you in the big blue Duramax. On the other side of me was Deadbolt.

Is this scheduled for Saturday, March 27th? I heard a suggestion for the last Saturday of every month but haven't seen any chatter about it recently.

Anyways, I'm down to volunteer for this Saturday. I can provide transport from Santa Barbara if anyone needs a carpool but I don't have a truck for hauling or tools (shovel, rake, etc.)

Im in for a cleanup soon! Lets get something going!

this Saturday may be too busy for a formal cleanup, but I would be interested in going up shooting and doing a bit of cleaning. Who else? Sat or Sun?

I'll make a deal for everyone here. I do not own a truck or yard tools (no yard...) but I will always carry a pair of work gloves and heavy duty trash bags in my trunk. If I am at the range and you are able, then I am willing
