What ever you shoot better is best for you. Why? Because if you have to shoot a firearm you are carrying concealed you damn sure want to be able to hit what you're shooting at.

There is no black/white, right/wrong with this question. It's 100% about you, your comforts and your skills.

.40S&W offers about 10% better ballistics over 9mm, but it is about 5% larger. I prefer .40S&W for my CCW gun (an M&P Compact), but there is such good 9mm self-defense ammo out there now that it isn't a bad choice.

I carry P226 everyday. I like 9mm pistols, because it is easier to manage, and it will do the job if you do your part. Stopping power only applies if you hit the target. And, 9mm SXT does a good job.

Carry what you can shoot. Size does not matter if you cannot hit what your aiming at.

+1, I would only add that the only other major factor is your ability to keep it concealed.

You may feel more comfortable with a full sized 1911 but if your typical attire is a Speedo and flip flops, it may not be appropriate.

The best?

Answer: Whichever you shoot better, that you can carry.

There are good defensive rounds for both, and have similar ballistics. Carry whichever you will hit the target with.

Thanks for the input guys, I'm sorry if the question was a bit vague. I have a usp in 40 and combat commander in 9 and although they are entirely different guns, I shoot better with the 9mm. I like 40cal for the size and supposed stopping power. Put it this way I don't plan on needing to use this thing beyond rec, but if need be I want to stop a perp. So it seems 9mm with good ammo would be best. I am looking in to the mpc series.

Six of one, half-dozen of the other.

Both will do the job well. Pick the one you shoot the best, and are the most comfortable with.

Then practice, practice, practice!!

Also keep in mind, CCW guns tend to be lighter and smaller and kick harder than larger guns. A PM9 shoots softer than a PM40.

Here's an interesting read regarding effectiveness of pistol calibers.
