Hello all-
I was thinking of buying some of the South African surplus 7.62 NATO ammo and I had a question- is this stuff magnetic? Is it either steel-jacketed or steel-cored? Is there any surplus 7.62 NATO that ISN'T magnetic? I ask because most of my local ranges do not allow you to use ammo that attracts a magnet.
Thanks for any info you can give me.

One more question- I am looking for some plinking fodder for my .308 M1. Is milsurp 7.62 NATO, be it South African, Argentinian, Austrian, British or Portuguese suitable for shooting in a .308 Garand?
Thanks,
Nic

I will break out a magnet when I get home tonight and see. I will say though that I have shot about 2500 rounds of this stuff through my M1a rifles and it seems to be good stuff. Out of the 2500 rounds I have had two bad rounds. One was a straight dud, tried to fire it three times never went off. The other was a delay, Pulled trigger and about a two second delay before it went off. (if my wife reads this:o ) seriously though I have had excellent luck with this stuff. Get it while you can

My FAL really loves SA and it's pretty accurate. I see no reason why it wouldn't work in your Garand. I never checked to see if it was magnetic, but I don't think so. I'll have to check and see when I get home.

Its non-magnetic, and fairly accurate.

South African is among the best surplus ammo available.

Buy all you can.

Steel core ammo is Armor Piercing and would be labeled as such.

Get even more of that if you can find it. :D

Who cares if its magnetic anyway?

The ranges where I shoot don't allow magnetic ammo... :(
I hoard steel core ammo for a SHTF-ey day.

Do they check it or something?

Where do you get steel-core ammo in CA? PM me if you like... :)

Yes, they check. RSOs carry a magnet.

You can find steel core all over the place- most surplus 7.62x54R, for example, is steel core.
