Exactly what is it's caliber designation. I've seen both 9x18mm and 9 x 19mm used in the same episode of shotgun news. ARE there two different calibers as per above?

Also when does the legislation banning us from ordering handgun ammo online take effect?

Yes those are two different calibers and they are not interchangeable.

-9x19 is 9mm luger (probably the *standard* 9mm you're talking about, its the one used in glocks and most other modern autos)

-9x18 is 9mm makarov

-9x17 is .380 auto

bloody hell that's confusing. good job I asked though. I was thinking it was atypo and I should gat a makarov as a cheap 2nd handgun. The hunt goes on then - any suggetsions for 9mm x 19 2nd HG

To answer your question, California residents are prohibited from mail ordering handgun ammo starting February 1, 2011.

and just incase you se it on a gun and wonder 9mm Para or 9mm Parabellum is the sam thing as 9mm Luger, they are both 9x19 just Para/parabellum was the German name.

Also have 9x21 and 9x23 Winchester.
Then there's the 9x25 as well.

A 2nd gun? What is your first?

If you're saying you don't have one, goto the range and rent a few. I'm a G17 owner, and happy :)

I've got a S&W M&P, Springfield XD9 V10, and SIG P228 all in 9mm. If you want something unique (or at least more unique than your dime-a-dozen tupperware 9mms), you could always get the compensated version of the XD or Glock. It's pretty cool; little bit less muzzle flip, louder, and shoots fire out of the ports.

G17 and G26 is what I go with. Most internal parts are interchangable, the big 17 mags will work in the 26, if there is a mag issue the baseplates and followers are interchangable.

First handgun is a SIG P226 in 9mm. I'm looking for something as simple and relaible but maybe more compact. The makarov appealed as it was a 6 round mag and looked very wee, but turns out its not the same caliber. Are there any wee Sig's in 9mm - what about the 239 ? any good?

P6, the German police surplus guns. Not wee, but a wee bit smaller than the 226

Compact in what way? You looking for concealed carry compact? Or do you just want a compact class gun?

Here is a good primer for "compact" guns..

If you're looking for a good compact gun check into the Kahr lineup.

The cw9, p9, pm9, k9, and mk9 are all very compact and in 9mm.
