Watching hunting on O.L.N. I noticed that no one operates a bolt action correctly.Same with the War shows. You,ll see a German soldier fumbling with his action until Sargent Saunders shoots the unlucky guy armed with that slow cycling bolt action. As a boy I was shown by WW2 vet how to cycle a Springfield. After firing, slap the bolt up and back with your trigger finger. To close, hook the bolt with thumb push forward and down. The hand on the fore end never moves Simple and fast. My VZ-24{straight bolt} is smooth as silk and faster than the modern bent bolt rifles. Practice until its automatic.

Then in the same month both Massad Ayoob and Jeff Cooper wrote that they could not believe the skill of bolt action rifle shooting was not being taught better.

Now, I use the thumb/finger to cycle the bolt without moving rifle butt from my shoulder. Much faster.
