View Full Version : Question about AK-22 / AR-22

i'm a newbie, and my dad bought a Mitchell AK-22 and AR-15 (.22LR) way back in the days (in the 1980's) from I think B&B in Los Angeles. My question is, were these considered assault rifles that needed to be registered? Or are they legal to take to range and shoot? They came with 30 round clips back then, so just wondering if the whole assault rifle bans covered .22's also. Any help is appreciated.

The assault weapon bans covered centerfire rifles, not rimfire rifles. So both of those rifles are OK. It's also OK to keep and use any of your magazines holding more than 10 rounds which were possessed in CA before the high-capacity magazine ban went into effect (2000, if I recall).
There are helpful links to assault weapon (AW) identification flowcharts near the top of this page, in the second blue bar from the top. The flowcharts are a lot easier to make sense out of than the actual AW ban law text.
Anyway, welcome to Calguns, and enjoy shooting those legal .22LR rifles!
