In a previous thread, a news report said that crime and serious cutbacks in the number of Richmond PD LEOs has caused an increase in requests for CCWs.

About 15 yrs ago, when carjacking first took off in the Bay Area, I remember reading that after a few months of reporting about it in Oakland and SF, the stories faded away not because the incidents were going down, but because many people were staying away from either city due to the reports. That was hurting local businesses (i.e., advertisers) who then complained to the media about all the bad press. The press, ever vigilant about making a profit (vs reporting the news), stopped reporting carjackings!

Ever since then, I've often thought that we're not being told the truth about crime. Well, once again, the internet is helping empower our side!

Many months ago I came across SFGate's Oakland and San Francisco Murder Maps: http://www.sfgate.com/maps/oaklandhomicides/
and http://www.sfgate.com/maps/sfhomicides/ Unfortunately, those maps only list where people were murdered, not where people where beaten so badly they're in a persistent "vegetative" state, coma, paralyzed, wheelchair bound, lost a limb, raped, stabbed, clubbed, beat up, robbed, etc.

Well, looks like someone put together a better resource! Check out: http://oakland.crimespotting.org and http://sanfrancisco.crimespotting.org

The default setting pulls up all the crimes listed in the right column for the previous week. Unfortunately, as far as I've been able to tell, you can only pull up all those crimes for the previous month, not for the year-to-date or for entire previous years. Nonetheless, even one month's worth of crimes may be eye-opening.

Be sure to share this w/as many people as you think would be motivated by it to join our side, the side supporting the Right (of law-abiding citizens) to Keep and Bear Arms (in public for self-defense).

This information might even help you as you engage your local sheriff or CoP re. why you want them to issue CCWs. (Not that it will really help much prior to a Sykes win if you live in either of those cities.). But at least they won't be able to, ahem, snow you about how rare are attacks against a person are in those cities.

Those are cool sites! I had no idea that auto theft was the most common crime in oakland. Or just how many cars were really being stolen!
