Maybe this has been covered before but I havent seen it. What is the status of the much ballyhooed Insta-Check the ATF was supposedly managing? I recall it was a mess at first what with false hits and illegal denials and all. Does ANY state use it?

If you're referring to NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System), yes, all states are required to use either NICS or their own state equivalent. In states without waiting periods, or with exceptions to waiting periods, it can take as little as 15 seconds to get approval and walk out the door with your purchase, once your payment is made and your 4473 is filled out.

Fed "instacheck" works pretty good. Certain exceptions can occur if your name is John Smith and there are other John Smiths with felonies, but those get cleared up pretty well and a personal identifier can subsequently be used to bypass this drama on future purchases.

It's irrelevant (for now) in CA since CA has its own system.
