I'd like to get/make/buy a target that can withstand a high powered rifle in the .308 / 30-06 range. The target would be about 100-300 yards out. I've thought about looking for used old man hole covers? LOL.... What I basically want is to be able to stand the target up securely and be able to drill it with bullets relentlessy and not have the bullet go through... I'm also looking for it to create some sort of "dinging" sound to confirm hits.

You guys have any ideas or a source? Not looking for anything pretty or fancy.

Rifle rounds are very hard on steel. Mild steel will not work here, but it will work on handguns. You are gonna need something like 500 Brinell hardness (i.e. armor plate). Not sure where you would find this but I would try locally as shipping would be very high.

ETA: Give the steel gong some leeway to move also. Like attaching it to chains so it can swing when hit and not have to absorb all the energy from the round. This can help prolong steel life. At my local range we shoot steel pie plates bvackerd by a spring so they can move some.

Hmm,
like yourself, being in the East Bay as I am, I would think the question needs to be re-phrased as: "where can I shoot at metal targets" , as with the exception of private land (you own or have friends), the National Forest, or BLM lands, I hve no idea where you could use steel targets. The local ranges in our area will not allow.

As for obtaining steel - search the roadside while driving, check scrapyards and construction sites as this may be a place to obtain. Years ago, I found some nice small sections of steel I-beam along Hwy 17 that fell off a truck - yes I stopped, risked life and limb to pick up. It was much fun at Los Altos turning it into swiss cheese.:D

I have two nice plates at home I recently got, but no place to use em.

You can also take a look at DS Welding (in Chatsworth for those in SoCal.)

I have the 18" armor plate gong from DS welding.. It is really fun to shoot but am strating to have some problems with it.. First off the welds that hold the "gong holder" (the armor plate isn't welded but bolted on, this is proper way) have cracked and are about to break off.. And then I was shooting my .22-250 at it over the weekend and blasted 7 holes right through it!!! With Varmint rounds!!! This was really odd to me because the target has been drilled 4-500 times with .223, .308, .30-06, and .22.250... Why the holes now? it never fot hot...

But for $118 it is a really nice target...

I intend on posting up a target at Panoche. I think I could find a 200-300 yard safe shooting lane.

Kruzr - thanks for the link on DS Welding, I'll check them out..... I'm in Socal pretty often in the year, maybe I'll swing by during one of the family's Disneyland trips, LOL.

Looks like the going rate for rifle targets is about $120 +shipping.
I was hoping to only ding the wallet for about $50, lol.
Christmas is fast approaching though, we'll see what I can find my stockings.

Have you thought about printing your own? There are many free targets available on line - even hostage rescue types.:)

Paper targets? Nah.... hahahaha
I can do paper targets at the range. I want to shoot something that will make a noise or move. So basically, I'm looking for a Gong type target. The target at Sniper Hide is cool, makes a sound and falls over, but it sure is expensive!
