View Full Version : SKS = "leading cop-killing rifle in America"?

I saw this in a newspaper I browse online. The article was about a drug bust but the last two paragraphs shown here caught my attention:
Police seized a half a pound of methamphetamine, half a pound of marijuana, packaging materials and scales, four loaded handguns and an SKS assault rifle from Alnas’ home, Colla said.
A report issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which is a division of the U.S. Department of Justice, stated that the SKS rifle is the model most frequently encountered by law enforcement officers, and said that the “high capacity rifles pose an enhanced threat to law enforcement, in part because of their ability to expel projectiles at velocities that are capable of penetrating the type of soft body armor typically worn by the law enforcement officers.”
In 2004, at least six police officers were killed with SKS assault rifles, according to the Violence Policy Center, which also called the rifles the “leading cop-killing rifle in America today.”
Anyone know the veracity of these statements? Are SKS rifles soon to be the next EBR (evil brown rifle)?

VPC has been after the SKS for several years now - so yes, it is the next evil rifle requiring eleimination from our shores. They are also after "accurate" rifles that shoot long range - as to VPC, no-one needs a sniper rifle.

There was a reporter and chief of police that confused a SKS with an AK-47. They called the "SKS" an assult rifle and that it is a banned rifle used only for killing. It took a number of emails and pictures to convince the reporter that it was indeed a AK-47 and not a SKS. I think they are confusing the two once again. Either way, yet another example of ignrant people talking about stuff they know nothing about.
Hondas and Toyota are the most stolen cars in the US. Does that mean its safe to say that hondas and Toyotas are the number one driven car by car jackers? So if you drive a honda or Toyota you are a car jacker because the "reports" say so. IGNORANT PEOPLE!!! ;)

Maybe they had a Chinese SKS D or M. An SKS with detatchable magazine is considered an assault weapon according to SB23?

What? You mean those cops weren't killed by a $1299 Bushmaster rifle or a $700 AK-47 with folding stocksets and bayonets? WOW!!!
Who would have ever thought that a $99 SKS could be as effectively employed (and guess what? It's not even banned!). Shows what the politicians know.
I personally don't care much for the SKS because of bad experiences with a Norinco. But you gotta admit for bang for your buck fun they're fantastic. The Russian and Romanian ones devour even the crappiest 7.62mm surplus and unlike Mini-30s NEVER complain about it.
And I still contend that with sufficient practice you can load stripper clips faster than box magazines.

I guess bolt action rifles don't shoot high velocity projectiles! It's only the evil looking high capacity ones (which most SKSs aren't).
:) :p :D NEED MORE SMILIES!

I think a Geo Metro going 40 mph would penetrate soft body armor too.
Hum... so my 8 SKS's are evil now? Eh <shrugs shoulders>.

WOW! You mean by putting a 30 round magazine on my Ruger 10/22 it becomes capable of penetrating level II ballistic Kevlar? Crazy!
Besides, I don't see why so many organizations use law enforcement officers "safety" as a justification for bans. Those law enforcement officers are against gun bans... have you ever met an LEO on a gun range or forum that wasn't hardcore into firearms, I know I haven't. Those guys miss their AR-15 as much as anyone else

I must admit that I commited a crime against Mother Nature a few weeks ago...I used my bayonet to repeatedly stab a tree.

The tree intentionally dropped a leaf in my coffee on more than one occasion. I politely asked it to stop, but it decided to continue its personal vendetta against me.

There was this one time... and I'm not afraid to admit that a 1980s washing machine may have been shot up by me and a few other guys with M1As and AR-15s (there was an arguement as to which would do more damage so we decided to find out on a washing machine) and it was later put out of it's misery by an M1 Garand with a bayonette on it.
Which leads to one of the more amusing things I've ever seen was seeing a golf ball shot with an AR-15 and it actually took off the tee like it was hit by a club!!!
Man... the good ol' days.

Better watch out, next time you stab a tree a hippy might drop down from it in one of those tree harnesses and scold you in a very polite and non-confrontational manner explaining to you that trees are people too.

Hehe, you reminded me of a story, now I gotta tell it. Me and my friend ride 4 wheelers all the time, one day I was out riding and I noticed the spot where we stopped to take in the view, also made a perfect shooting range, about 200 yds or so into the side of a hill out in the middle of nowhere, and top it all off, it had a nice little valley that echoed sound right into an old growth redwood with a tree sitter in it. This guy had been there for months, and I always make sure to honk my horn and scream out the window when ever I dorve by at 2am, you know, just to keep him on his toes. Well anyways, the next day I went riding back out to that same spot with my SKS and just started shooting into the embankment. I shoot about 20 rounds and decided that was enough (no targets get's boring). I take out my ear plugs to hear the tree sitter screaming at me telling me I'm illegally shooting (I'm not) and lots of profanity and calling me a redneck. I just laughed like hell and hopped on my quad and rode home.
Still, the most fun was to sneak up on that tree in the middle of the night with a small chain saw, just to start it up and rev it real loud. Good times.
