Tikka T3 in .308--> due to the detachable magazine in .308 which the remington 700 does not offer

I'd give the other rifles a pep talk so they'd become bold, too.

Add a little hot sauce and they can be bold AND spicy!

A good used winchester model 70 would be good as well. The detachable mag tikka offers isn't really a selling point for me, They are good accurate rifles but that damn detachable mag is one of the parts I actually hate about the tikka they are so expensive and the tikka rifles feel like toys to me a bolt action is supposed to feel solid. I still believe they are good rifles and will be getting one soon maybe it will grow on me.

I have hunted with a Remington 700 In .243 in a AICS not the best platform to lug around in the woods sorry. Damn good chassis system and accurate gun but I would much rather have a mcmillan or HS on a rifle I will be hunting with unless of course you're taking deer at 600 yards from a flat or something.

Weatherby, Mark V action, 30-06. smooth action and very accurate. It cost a little more but it's oh so nice!

Well if I can only purchase 1, its gonna be a Desert Tactical Arms SRS. But I would have the conversions to be able to shoot 243 WIN, 308 WIN, 300 WIN, and 338 LM.

Before I acquired BRD my original plan was to purchase one in .308 but after calling DTA to reserve a spot in line for one I decided it was either gonna be this ONE rifle or SEVERAL of the other rifles that I wanted. I chose quantity. But its still on my radar, and I actually got to fondle the one at OC Armory a few times...someday

Remington 700 SPS stainless in 30-06 or 270 with a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 or VX-III 3.5-10x40. I wouldn't want the extra weight of a heavy barrel for a hunting rifle, keep it light weight and simple.

The question in the title, and the request for recommendations appear to be entirely different questions. If i could have only one bolt action rifle it'd be a desert tactical arms srs. For average target shooting and occasional deer hunting I'd recommend the 700 for a bolt action.

Well if I had the budget it would be a Kimber 84M Montana in 308. But I can't put $1100 into a single rifle right now. So I'd "settle" for a Tikka T3 Lite in either 308 or 30-06.

However I honestly don't believe in using a hunting rifle for target shooting. The 6.2lb Tikka will make tight sub MOA groups but the light barrel on it or any hunting rifle will heat up quickly causing the groups to open up. At the same time I don't want to lug a 9lb heavy barreled varmint/target/tactical rifle through the back country.

My advice is to pick out a decent target/varmint/tactical rifle like a Savage 10FP (https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/78301) or better yet a 10FCK-K in 308 for the range and then save up for a $400-500 30-06 deer rifle like a Howa or better yet a Tikka.

Nice set up Randall. Everyones recommending these ridiculous rifles most guys are not going to hunt deer or target practice with .338 Lapua Mag I think a more general purpose rifle would be .308,30-06,.243. A 30-06 is one of the most versatile rounds around and factory ammo is every where.

I haven't gotten a chance to shoot most of the fine rifles listed. But I have shot my Swedish Mauser a bit. She's over 100 years old, but feels like she was built yesterday. Very smooth action, and far more accurate than I'll ever be. Best $150 bucks I ever spent. That was a while ago though, when $150 got you a real nice surplus gun.

NO, I mean 1.1 INCH.
Note the quarter laying on the scanner with the rear of the target.
Quarters measure 0.95" as a known standard reference.

The notes on the pasters denote where each shot landed.
So 500 head 1 is the 1st shot at 500 on the head, 500 head 2 is the 2nd shot etc...

We fired two sets of 3 rounds at the 8 inch diameter blue "head" target, 3 rounds from 500yds and the other 3 rounds from 600yds.
Keep in mind, this is under the pressure of a time limit during a match with about 15mph wind, no time to wait for wind, on the ground with only a bipod and rear bag.
This is NOT some group shot in no-wind conditions from a bench with all the time you want to wait for perfect wind conditions.
