View Full Version : Tried my ACOG at 300, 400, and 500 yard today. I'm very impressed.

Today was NCPPRC's monthly distance rifle practice. Traditionally, I only shoot my .308 out to the 1k. As I was grabbing my equipment to leave, I got this sudden itch to try out my 20" govt style AR-15 w/ACOG. I only reload .308 and the time frame I had did not allow me to pick up any match ammo......So I brought a box of PMC Gold with me (that cheapo 55 grain stuff). After I had gathered data on my .308 at the 300, 400, and 500 shooting intervals, I used the remaining time to play with the AR and see what it could do. I was not expecting anything close to the sub-MOA performance of my .308, but EVERY shot I fired at 300, 400, and 500 yards with my TA01 ACOG hit within the silhouette. I expected the ammo to be about 4 MOA in accuracy and the results certainly confirm this. Sure, the drop lines did not match up exactly and my first few shots were high or low but I was impressed at what a VERY ORDINARY STOCK AR could do with such cheapo ammo at 500 yards. My AK delivers the kind of performance at 100 yards that my AR-15 just delivered with crappy ammo and an ACOG at 500 yards. I'm glad I had a good cheek weld though, I can see that being a problem with the ACOGs. Just place your cheek in the same place and make sure the front site shadow is always in the same place. If ya do that, you're golden!

According the Trijicon, the difference in trajectory from bullet to bullet (M193 vs. M855) or barrel to barrel (14.5" vs. 20") is usually less then the MOA thickness of the stadia lines. It's not precision shooting, but it will certainly do the job at 500 yards on torso sized targets.

ACOG is AR candy.

ACOG's are truly awesome.

And yes, USMC qualification includes 500 yards with iron sights. In fact, the 500 was where I always pulled my expert qual, since my standing 200 was terrible and my kneeling 300 was pretty lousy . But I could put at least 8/10 in the black on the 500 yard line, every time. Saved my butt.

I still can't shoot for crap in the kneeling. I think my knees are too damned skinny.

This I know. lol. Its a still impressive to discover for yourself that a standard, ordinary AR can do so much with crappy commercial spec ammo. The stadia lines no where near lined up though. I had a 100m zero with this ammo. The scope is calibrated in meters so the lines were off for the combined effects of yards vs. meters, HUGE velocity differences, and variations in bullet weight. Still, even with all these things throwing me off, all shots landed within the confines of the silhouette and correcting for second shots was easy.

In case anybody wants to know, my 300yard drop matched the TA01's 400m stadia line. My 425yard drop was essentially even with the 500 m line and my 500 yard drop was exactly between the 500 and 600 yard stadia line with 55grain PMC Gold.

Whenever I actually get around to reloading .223 in addition to .308, I'll take the time to try and match the stadia lines as best I can.

when I first got my ACOG, we took it to ASR and was hitting the 200-600 yrd steel. ACOGs are just simply badass and worth every penny

This. My kneeling/sitting were always perfect. Averaged about 7/10 at the 500 yard prone. But standing was just horrible.
