Right now I wanna get a cheap red dot to go on my AR.

Mainly I just want something simple and cheap that will see over the front sight.

Any ideas?

Vortex Strikefire. EVERYONE loves them. They're like $150ish or so and are pretty solid. Im not one thats usually fond of inexpensive gun accessories (because they usually suck) but this red dot is awesome, especially for how much you pay.

It's supposed to be weapon grade. The owner tests all models on his .308 according to his posts on AR-15.com

go ahead and laugh but the tasco 1x30 at walmart for 32 bucks has been holding up on my sks for over a thousand rounds
haven't adjusted it since the day I bought it and it still dead on
bright enough to be seen here in the desert in the summer sun
and it takes standard batteries from the 99 cent store :p

I've had a Walther PS22 on my Ruger 10/22 for about a year now and it has been great. Since they are on sale right now at Midway for $60, I just ordered one for my "beater" AR.

I'm also in the market for cheep red dot. I'll probably go with a model from primary arms too. They're always getting rave reviews on ar15.com.

Should fit without issue. The one on my Ruger is on a weaver base, though. The one I ordered today will go on a flat-top AR. We'll see.

Primary arms is GTG on a range rifle. Great price, great quality, and they look cool like the high end red dots.

+1 on the Vortes Strikefire.

It's a solid unit. co-witness with the FSP.
Biggest complaint is that it's a little dim in extreme sunlight.
It has an Unconditional lifetime warranty, as long as you don't purposely break it or loose it, they'll send you another one no problems.

i had both the primary arms and vortex strikefire before I went with the aimpoint micro.

they are both good sights, but here are a few things I didnt like about each:

vortex: not as bright as the Primary arms. also has a darker tint to the glass that the PA. the on/off switch is on the side and its kinda funky location; i never got used to it and would accidently shut it off all the time. Its also a little bit heavier that the primary arms m3 style i had.

Primary arms: very similar is size/function to a aimpoint m3. battery life isnt as good as vortex. other than that, its a very good red dot for the price. If its just a range gun, it will serve you well. I put almost 2000 rounds through my gun with it, never once did it lose zero or any other problem.

They both have good warranties. Marshall @ primary arms is very easy to get a hold of and he strives to ensure he puts out a good product. It may be made in china, but its still a good product.

I went to a gun store today and was looking at Red Dot scopes and this one had a dot that kept moving around what is the deal??

Most of them were turned off though so is that how they all are?

do you think i would have to buy risers for it?

Yes. It sits really low on the AR upper. Very annoying without a riser of some sort. NTM the dot will be in the middle of your front sight base without a riser.

IMO, Red dots tend to amplify movement moreso than iron sights. I'm guessing the dot was moving because you were. Set it on the counter top and look through it.

Walther PS22 -> sell the cantilever mount what comes with it -> buy either Burris Xtreme or Leupold PRW mount => $60, durable, looks great & excellent combination...

I have both the Vortex and Primary Arms Red dots + their respective magnifiers. The Vortex feels a little better built to me. I like that it has red and green dots, but it was hard to see the dots in bright sunlight. The magnifier was okay, pretty small FOV. The PA red dot is super bright, and the selectable reticles is nice. It uses a AA battery, unlike the Vortex. The 3x magnifier is humongous and the eye relief is very short, but things look pretty good through it. I wish I could have a swivel mount for it instead of quick-disconnecting it on and off all the time.

I have a Bushnell Holosight. It's not "cheap" but it's basiclly a first generation EO tech552.
I'm not sure about the other sights mentioned but I took my Holo sight and kicked it around the backyard and it still works like the day I got it.

Primary Arms! No doubt about it!

Paid $99 bucks, shipped out right away, stuck in front of my cheap-*** Aimpoint Clone (don't know why anyone buys the expensive schizel), put it on my piece last night and LOVE IT!

Aimpoint Clone from JeffU $110 + $99 Primary Arms Red Dot = A great combo and an incredible savings. Look awesome to. Check out my pics.

+1 again on the Strikefire! Got it from Scott at Liberty Optics (sponsor of this forum), his customer service is fantastic.

For $129 shipped, I got the Vortex, a riser mount that put it perfectly to co-witness with the BUIS, a 2x magnifier with case, and help with a phone call to mount it. For those that complained of the dot intensity, did you try it with the green dot instead? Much easier to see in the daylight, and the Strikefire has a switch that automatically dims it by 5(?) settings to work with NVG's. Was that turned on?

I'm going to get another one soon for my other rifle, it's that good!

:cheers2:
Cheers!

Scott at Liberty told me to contact Vortex, Vortex never replied. Forgot about it until now.

Ouch, one very good reason to stick with a "name brand", their reputation is on the line.
I called EO tech about service for my Holosight, they aren't sold under the Bushnell name anymore. "Send it in and we'll fix it," is what I was told. There's nothing wrong with the sight but having the backing of L3 and EO tech is nice to know.
