i bought a pistol legally in the philippines and im wondering how would i be able to bring it to california. The pistol is on the california approved list. Its a 1911 A2

I know i would have to check it in on the plane in a locked container, but what else would i have to do?

thanks

I suggest that you just leave that in P.I. less headaches and you have more choices here.

Are you active duty military being stationed here?

If so, as far as CA is concerned, just bring it.

Or, are you moving here permanently? If that's the case, you would be a 'personal handgun importer', and you would need to file the form New Resident Handgun Ownership Report (http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/ab991frm.pdf)

In either case, the Handgun Roster does not apply.

Philipines!

If you're not in the military, there's lots of ATF hoops to jump through.

Hmmm.

Perhaps I misunderstand the problem.

How does one legally buy a gun in the Philippines? Philippine citizen? US citizen? Dual citizenship?

It's true that there are lots of import regs (http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/waisidx_09/27cfr447_09.html).

BTW, ATF website has just been redesigned, and darned poorly.

Here's a Calguns post (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showpost.php?p=2388110&postcount=1) on how one guy does it.

It's such a big deal, that I thought someone doing an 'import' would already know this stuff, so it didn't occur to me that 'legally buy in the Philippines' would leave that kind of detail unstated if that was what was going on.

Thanks for all the replies im reading through all the info now.

im not in the armed forces. i am a dual citizen though, thats how i was able to buy it when i was in the philippines. im already back in cali, and i left the gun with a family member. since its my first gun im kinda attached to it.

it does seem like a lot of loops to jump through but im still motivated and optimistic. So its starting to seem like i need an importer and i just cant go to the philippines and bring it back myself.

I was also wondering if its legal for me to fill out the New Resident Handgun Form for california. Im thinking it would be ok because i legally own the gun, and it is licensed to me; i just dont have it in the state yet. What are your guys thoughts on this?

thanks again for all the info

Probably situation is OP is U.S. citizen, in the Philippines for vacation, can get RIA 1911 for dirt cheap as thats where its manufactured, wants to buy one or two and bring it back to Cali. Is this possible.

In order to legally bring a firearm into the USA, you will need BATFE approval.
Otherwise, it will not be cleared by US Customs. They will confiscate/destroy any firearm(s) you try and bring into the USA without BATFE approval.

Although not exactly for non-mil people this is a decent source.

IIRC if you want to bring it hereyou have to find the FFL that has importation license. I heard(rumor) that there is one in San Francisco, but don't quote me on that. I also heard it costs an arm an a leg.
