so since I discovered the military channel it is crawling with lovely 308 semi's from the m110 to the lwrc sabr. It looks like I can build with good quality parts a nice 308 semi (JD machine and dpms parts) for about 1500 or so, the REPR is twice that....would it be worth the extra? My budget can't really afford a 3000 gun but if I saved etc. in time I could. Anyone have other options they would reccomend? looking for all ideas.

I'd say a Rock River Arms LAR-8, for about $1150, is an very good rifle for the money. I'm basing it on the overall RRA reputation.

M14/M1A
FAL
AR10- think thats a 308 but I dont know ARs that well
Saiga 308 ( thats probably not what youre looking for)

Between all of the ones listed i woudl go for a polytec M14 ( theire cheaper than the SA M1A ) and then that gives you a 500 $ start on building it to a high grade rifle. Polys have a bad rap. i have one and so far It seems to be really really accurate and shoots fine.

.308 AR hands down. I decided to go the DPMS type .308 AR route and I love it. It takes the awesome SR-25 type mags. So far my .308 hasn't had a single function. It IS a bench gun but still, after several hundred rounds down the pipe there have been no issues. And that thing has acceptable accuracy too. 1.100" 5 shot group at 200 yds. If the loads were tuned better I guaruntee the group would have been tighter. Theres no way in hell my M1A would do that.

So if you want extreme modularity, reliability, accuracy, bad assness, then the .308 AR is the way to go. Some people prefer Armalite patterned guns, some prefer DPMS type.

I would save the money and buy a REPR.... Held one and was amazed at the overall quality of the rifle.

LMT MWS, if you can wait for it, FAL, or LWRC REPR (not nec. in that order)

I see no reason to pay 3K for a piston operated .308 AR. You can get one for much less that is accurate as **** and does everything you need it to do. But hey, I dont see great reasons to get a lot of things but I still want em! REPR included ;) Go with what turns you on the most

.308 AR all the way yes. Just make sure you don't get a DPMS lower marked with "Panther" — isn't that correct? It's on the ban list I believe.

I own a REPR, 2 FAL's and an M1A.

If you want to any kind of action shooting, get an M1A because it is the only one that can be used without a BB and it can use highcap mags.

If you want to bench shoot, do your homework and get whatever you want.

My favorite .308 is the FAL.

The 16" REPR has a lot of recoil, and the mag situation sucks. When LaRue or Magpul get their .308 mags out things will be better.

No,
Not very many shoot a 308 enough to need a piston.

For something different, there's the Keltec RFB.

A magazine lock and 10 round magazines, are what is needed to make a CA legal Kel-Tec RFB.

seems the threaded barrel and 26.1" overall would make it an AW?

correction, guess it could be threaded with BB, BUT still not 26.1"

Depends on which version of the RFB.

The RFB Target with it's 32" barrel has an OAL of 40".
The RFB Carbine with it's 18" barrel has an OAL of 26", so add a 4" muzzle attachment (brake/suppressor/barrel extension).

You are a genious. I was going to wait for them top release a middle barrel length... but I can get a sweet break for it... Wow, thanks for bringing that up I am going to have to start saving for it now.

Not true. You can go featureless with the Duraglock/Solar Tactical grips on the .308 ARs. Then you get to use legally owned hi-caps and rebuild them into Pmags! Yes, that is an erection you are getting.
