Currently only for Military but can you imagine the consequences for civilians if something like this were mandatory.
Round count, burst count, gps, identification, etc.

Sweet, we could all bump up our counts so the .gov would think our guns were firing themselves 24/7. Where the hell are they getting all that ammo?

Firmware is always modifiable :)

This is not even needed. Perform regular maintenance and the weapon will run fine.

Though, I can see the OPs point with regards to mandatory inclusion in civilian firearms.

Hmmm, and they could add a GPS to that, so they can track our EBRs...

GPS does not work so well indoors unless the windows are open...

Do you think that would be any different than modifying serial numbers?

For some reason, the SOP system from Metal Gear Solid 4 just came to mind... :p

SOB! I swear to (insert the name of your higher power here), that I thought of this idea (sans transmitting info) a couple of years ago while browsing the "firearms for sale" section. I was tired of seeing "less than 500 rounds fired" in every freakin' ad. I just didn't do anything about it because I figured there would be about zero demand for it. Shows how much I know!

Why would you not want one. From what I can tell it just logs FTF, Round count and burst rates. I Want one. You boys with the tin-foil hats need to take your paranoia down a level. <duck> :D

From 6mmbr
"........Black Box Technology Limited to Military… For Now
The technology is exciting, though the ramifications for gun control are chilling to say the least..............We do worry about the potential application of “black box” technology to defensive firearms. The digital records of shots fired as well as the sequence of those shots could be used as evidence in trials of gun owners. Imagine being on trial and having your testimony “impeached” by a digital chip removed from your gun"

From the FN site
"In operation, the FN Black Box can transmit the number of rounds fired through the Armatronics™ communication channels with the soldier system.

When coupled to a GPS, the FN Black Box can transmit its identification and localization data to the upper level command through the communication equipment of the soldier"

all seems well until someone like DeLeon takes ahold of it and adds it to microstamping etc.

Cool but kinda frivolous. A notebook w/pen is alot cheaper and easier to use. Reminds me of those stupid pedometers for fat people. Just run for a 1/2 hr & forget the amount of steps. Not to mention my fatty AR doesn't need anymore weight.

You do know that H&K and SIG have been installing RFIDs on their government/military contract firearms for the last 2-3 years.

Where do you guys find your tinfoil? All I can find at the store is aluminum foil. So I've been using a stainless steel colendar instead, makes me invisible to black helicopters too :TFH:

Would love to have one, but sorry California, it goes inside the pistol grip of my rifle, and by your law, they are not allowed......

Oh dear, how sad, never mind.
