Karlin is editor and factotum for Buzzflash (http://buzzflash.com), a particularly vile hard lefty organizing and propaganda site.

I'm sorta tempted to sign up to keep "informed" as to what I can do to stop terrorists from obtaining .50 calibre sniper rifles, but I'm not sure I can stomach the materials I'd receive. It can be a good idea to "know thy enemy".

Paranoid much? A .50 cartridge can do a lot of damage to an aircraft but c'mon, it's not like a guided missle. Assuming that a terrorist cares enough to put some holes in a commercial airliner, this is not as easy as they make it out to be. They would have to hit the pilot and then the co-pilot on a target moving 200+mph.

I'm thinking of the Israeli commercial aircraft that had 2 heat seeking missles hit it and they were still able to make the landing with only minor injuries.

I find this very amusing.

hmmmm....
one of the best fighter planes of WWII, the P51, carried 6 x .50cal machine guns...
I wonder how many P51 pilots had 1 shot kills @ 200 yards?

With all the trainning that needs to go into shooting one, an RPG would be cheeper and more effictive right?

no no no... RPG's are already illegal, didn't you know terrorists know this and therefore know they better not try it with an illegal device. that's why banning the .50 is such a good idea... they will now need to use a 30.06 or something. Don't worry though... we can ban 30.06 next. we should all be safe soon. http://www.calguns.net/banghead.gif

It really doesn't matter though.
I tried in vain to make similar points to otherwise intelligent people on another forum. The probability of "sniping" an aircraft even at it's most vulnerable point in flight is a ridiculous exaggeration of the "power" of these dastardly weapons of destruction and the abilities of even the most skilled shooters in the world. It all fell on deaf ears. The bottom line is that most folks generally don't understand firearms and the art and science of shooting enough to realize any of this.

Some people want to remain convinced that .50s are the biggest (and newest http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif) threat to commercial air travel since 9-11. I even brought up the fact that lightning strikes are considered one of the biggest hazards to aircraft and that the likelihood of a weather-related accident was far greater than the hazard presented from a ground-based shot from a rifle. Nope. No one wanted to believe it, in spite of numerous cites.

OMG, this website is right on. Seriously.

Terrorists are bad people. They will using .50 Caliber rifles to shoot down planes, because, being terrorists, they like shooting at a fast flying moving target with a rifle instead of just making a bomb with materials they get at home depot. Why? Because terrorists are sneaky like that.

The law in California banning .50 Caliber rifles is a smart law too, because it will keep the rifles out of terrorist hands. Because we all know that terrorists ALWAYS follow the law. Infact, they're sensible people.
