That's a pretty vague question. I expect mail-order sales will be strong leading up till AB962 takes effect. Then things will go back to normal (if you consider getting thumbprinted at Walmart normal).

AB962 does not affect private ammo sales and will not be effective until Feb 2011.

^^what he said^^

recently, we have seen a lot of worried folks come in all riled up about "the upcoming ammo ban"....and we have spent a lot of time talking them down, and providing the facts of AB962...

Maybe things have changed from this draft, but originally the transfer of more than 50 rounds per month between individuals other than family members was prohibited by the bill. Did that go away?

yes...most definitely..

remember, this only applies to handgun ammo in the first place (although, i am not sure how .22lr and other calibers that are commonly used in both rifle and handguns fits).

effective feb, 2010...
you, the buyer will need to provide your phone #, driver lic#, proof of age, and thumbprint to me, the seller...

I (the seller) will need to keep handgun ammo 'behind the counter', or somewhere that restricts your ability to simply pluck a box off the shelf, and requires you (the buyer) to ask me (the seller) to retreive it for you.

no sales of handgun ammo to people under 21.

the provision for a limit to rounds sold didnt make it to the final version.

I am probably forgetting something, but that is the nuts and bolts of it.

take care,
g

I believe geek meant to say 2011.

This bill would, subject to exceptions, commencing February 1, 2011,
require handgun ammunition vendors to obtain a thumbprint and other
information from ammunition purchasers, as specified. A violation of these
provisions would be a misdemeanor...
The bill would provide, subject to exceptions, that commencing February
1, 2011, the delivery or transfer of ownership of handgun ammunition may
only occur in a face-to-face transaction, with the deliverer or transferor
being provided bona fide evidence of identity of the purchaser or other
transferee. A violation of these provisions would be a misdemeanor.

Seems like many WM's have completely discontinued ammo even now.

In retrospect, it looks like they don't keep popular items that they have availability issues with. Other recently-departed items, Mobil-1 filters and motorcycle oil. Availability was always sketchy, then they were gone.
The M1 filters disappeared within the last 6 months.

I doubt any WM's will be selling ammo after this takes effect... they aren't going to want to deal with keeping customer records for 20 years.

I haven't heard of any walmarts NOT carrying ammo at this point, but I agree that it's doubtful they will keep records and fingerprints after 2011, so either no ammo, or more likely they will ONLY sell shotgun ammo.

If you look at the text of the link you included, you'll see that that's the bill as introduced.

The bill info page is here (http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=ab_962&sess=0910&house=B&author=de_leon) - you want to read the "Chaptered" version, that's the one signed by the governator.

Private ammo sales will go through the roof starting Feb 2011. I expect a huge underground market for ammo. What effect this will have on prices, who knows.

Thank you all for clarifying that. Hopefully some of the online vendors will understand the exception for those with a 03 and COE and sell to us.

Good luck with that.

Some vendors won't even ship ammo to California today simply because three cities don't allow it.
Others get confused between Orange County California and an Orange County on the east coast that doesn't allow ammo.
