Whoa. I didn't know trap was something it comes to me naturally (given a lots and lots of handicap!!)

Anyhow, livermore is bit far and wondering if anywhere near me (Oakland) has trap day? Chabot's one seems to me not in use http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Ahh... a new shooting addiction for you.

Rika; Livermore is the best within 50 miles.

Chabot sucks. They use to be good but then all their trap and skeet shooters sued the Chabot Gun Club and they all went to Livermore.
Chabot was forced to close down all the lanes except two and they only shoot once or twice a week.

I tried out trap for the first time, at Chabot this Saturday. I loved it too http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif , once I figured out how to load my model 12. $8 a round is pretty steep though. What shotgun did you use Rikka? I think I'm going to give the range in martinez a try.

Another fun shotgun sport is sporting clays. http://www.coyoteclays.com/SportingClays.htm

Yup - trap can get pretty addicting http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Chabot is usually open only on the weekends - and only if somebody is there to run it. I've never seen more than 1 lane at a time open. Livermore - is your best option - Tuesday night trap is going to open up pretty soon....

Rika made the instructor shake his head, every time he watched her break clays with his shotgun. She only missed when there was no money at stake. Word to the wise. Dont bet against Rika! She's a natural! http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

If your looking for a Browning O/U or a Beretta shotgun you should stop by Coyote Valley and check out their walk in vault. Very nice selection and good prices. At times you can find some very nice used shotguns there.

OK, by popular demand here's the info. http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
the instructor is well known throughout the bay area, his name is George Reppas he usually has people mail him a check and he 'plugs' you into one of his group classes which happen every couple of months during winter, I think he may have monthly group classes during summer. cost is $45/person.
George has a website where you can get his email and phone number info, he answers the phone way faster than email http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif so I'd recommend calling him instead, he also offers private classes. there were 12 students in class and George had 3 assistant instructors with him so it's a 3-1 ratio. He likes to keep classes around that number and if they are filled up, he'll enroll you on the next one. BTW, you won't magically improve unless you are Rika http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif but the tips you get are Great to practice and if you do plan to get serious about it, you will need private lessons, it will pay off in the end.

http://www.georgereppas.com

hope this helps you all.

Thanks for the info I might have to check it out. But livermore's so verrryyyy farrrrrr.

Clarification!

The instructor let me shoot from same center position all the time. Its the easiest since the the clay doesn't go sideways! Also it helps my first time doing trap was the class. I haven't developped bad habit. And it was his $$$ gun too.

But now even Ted is buying shotgun, we have a good number to do shooting toegether. More fun http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ivanimal your 20 guage said he likes my place for a while! http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I will buy one from Andy soon.

Trader Jack How come Chabot sucks? Only thing I need is flying clays and reasonable cost...

chickenfried
03-29-2005, 3:35 PM
Chabot is the most expensive for trap. The member price of $7 is more than some places charge the non-members. I'm not a member so it's $8.

Wow, you're trying out all the sports, Rikka. What about highpower rifle competition, huh? When you going to give that a try? Only checking cause that's my favorite http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Andy now has my over under in his posession as well. I almost went out and bought another
shotgun today because the safe looked empty!

Rika I want to install a new recoil pad on the butstock next time you reload let me know so I can buy the pad and install it while you reload. I takes me about an hour to fit and finish.

I was always right handed and now am left eye dominant. It is like learning to shoot all over again. I was 2 for my first 15. After George stood behind me and showed me what I was doing wrong in his masterfuly simplific way I hit 7 of my last 8. I feel good about shooting the 12 gauge again.

Money well spent, except for the getting beat up by Rika part.

Now I'm getting interested in this...

I live in Dublin, so Livermore is just a hop, skip and a jump.

I know I shouldn't use my Benelli M1S90 for trap shooting, so what are good shotguns and gauges to consider for this sport?

Thanks!

If you have a 28" barrel for your M1S90 - why not? One thing I've never seen at Livermore is anybody being put down because of the equipment that they were using.

I started with a Beretta AL391 semi auto in 12, liked it so much I bought the same model in 20 for my son. I just recently purchased a Beretta 687 O/U Silver Pidgeon III - I still can't hit squat though http://community.the-underdogs.org/smiley/happy/silly.gif

Ivanimal. Boy, it must be like learning to walk all over again for you.

I am slacking on practicing handgun but must have to reload in next couple of weeks for sure.

Thanks Ivanimal aka my big angel.

For those of you commenting on Chabot's cost ($7 or $8...ouch). Livermore, if you are a member, you can shot a round for $4.35 (by buying their 20 round punch card). The trap range in Manteca (only one trap house though and limited hours) is $4.00. The Stockton Trap & Skeet is in the $5 range, but I have not been there yet, but I hear it's half way decent.

The Livermore class was fun, but I tend to second guess (i.e. miss) my shot when someone is looking over my shoulder, at least that's my excuse and I'm stickin' to it!

A fun sporting clays class to take is www.ospschool.com (http://www.ospschool.com) when Vicki and Gil come to Comanche Hills Hunting Preserve up at Lake Comanche. Comanche Hills is also a great place to practice sporting clays. I think it's about $0.36 a clay plus golf/gun cart rental there. The class is an all day class (or multi-day class if you want to spend the $$). I took it a few weeks ago and learned a huge amount that I am still trying to incorporate in my shooting style. It was also the first time I had ever seen a "mini" clay target. It appeared to be the size and speed of a supersonic oreo cookie. I could not hit that thing to save my soul.

The match this weekend is the California Golden State Trapshooting Association Winter Chain.
It'll probably be busier Sunday than Saturday, but the practice traps are still open.

Good Luck,

Hopefully I did not scare people away from Livermore this Saturday from my previous post. It ended up being fairly deserted after 1:00pm. There were only a couple people shooting. The wind was playing with the targets though. I swear I saw one of my targets drop about 4ft with one gust of wind.

Hey! I was going to use that excuse http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Pretty much as Craig said, was pretty empty today. Shot 4 rounds within an hour and a half, the last one by myself.

How about USI in Concord (on Evora Rd)? Are they comparable with Livermore? (I live about 1/2 between USI and Livermore).

What's the deal with memberships there? The place is owned by several clubs, so which one to join? Anyone know what the membership/initiation fees are?

Since I did just join Livermore this last Saturday... $25 Initiation fee (much cheaper than Chabot's $60) and $65 for the year. I also bought a 20 round punch card for trap for $87. I'm hoping that the rifle/pistol range opens up here shortly...

I'm a member of Diablo Rod & Gun @ USI and there is a meeting THIS THURSDAY 4/7 where you can join up.

If you need details/sponsorship feel free to contact me.

I can't say that I am intimately familiar with the other 3 clubs and what they have to offer, afaik use of the facilities is the same, but different clubs host different events.
Here is a link to see what Diablo R&G has on tap (http://www.diablorodandgun.com/schedule.html)

The newsletter has even more details. (http://www.diablorodandgun.com/news/0503.html)

Diablo Rod & Gun is having their monthly membership meeting tonight. Currently there is a $10 one time initiation fee. They will be raising the initiation fee to $40 tonight, so if you are interested in signing up tonight at 7:30, you will save a couple bux.
