Quick question, my wife was told by a local police officer that you're not allowed to posess more than 2000 rounds of ammunition in Cal. I think he's full of it. Am I right? I can't find that law for California or Fresno, so he's just making stuff up, right?

+1, FUD

There was a discussion a few weeks ago regarding possible limits on the weight or volume of contained powder, but it seemed that storage options were available to negate it being an issue.

I'll try to find the thread...

Looks like for reloaders, either 20 or 50lbs of powder (depending on how stored) and 10,000 primers... that's from the UBC, not the PC.

5251(b)(3) Stocks of small arms ammunition, propellant-actuated power cartridges, small arms ammunition primers in quantities of less than 750,000, and smokeless propellant in quantities of less than 750 pounds.

750,000 appears to be the number per PC.

Guy doesn't know what he's talking about. There are some regulations surrounding loose powder and primers, nothing about loaded cartridges (at least until you get into some serious quantities).

The answer to that questions is, "What penal code is that officer, I'd sure like to make sure I'm in compliance."

He either eats crow or wastes 30 minutes looking through codes then eats crow. How much time ya got?

I'm curious under what circumstances did this even come up? Why would a police officer be talking to your wife (and not you) about your ammo habits?

Then there are a lot of law breakers in this state. its BS. Just another freaking cop that talks through his *** not his mouth. There are LEOs that ACTUALLY take the time to research and kknow the laws before opening their mouths. Some cops think because they are cops that their word/opinion IS the law.

Note at the beginning, it gives no numerical indication on "small arms ammo". The cite is in reference to subsection (b) that I did not quote, which states that they must be stored in their original shipping containers until use.

IOTW, it's a violation of 5251(b)(3) to buy a bunch of boxes of ammo and dump them into a coffee can.

OP,

Please let your wife friend know that I happen to have +2000 rounds of ammo. He's more than welcome to arrest me for it if he can cite a law which states that +2000 rounds is illegal. Hell, (if they have it in stock) WalMart will still sell you 6 boxes of 550 round bulk pack .22lr at a time. That's 3300 ronds per purchase. How the hell could that be illegal?

tombinghamthegreat

In my opinion most people could not afford shooting unless they buy ammo in bulk, meaning for example buying 7.62x39 in cases of minimum of 1000 rounds online. If one where to buy surplus, they come in cases with a minimum of 1000-2000 rounds of ammo, which is very normal for the average calgun member. Did the officer just make that fud up or did he hear it from somewhere?

Good catch, as 5251 is listed under Subchapter 7. General Industry Safety Orders

Long story. Lets just say that the police and neighbors were involved and my wife was looking after neighbors children for a little while. She was talking to the cop and the neighbor husband, who was asking a lot of firearm related questions. If I go into anymore detail it would be too personal for the neighbors and not my business to reveal it. For the record, my wife never said we even own guns.

Yeah, just got the whole story...the cop doesn't know squat. He was just one of the officers there, being a jerk from what my wife said. The other one said that there's a limit, but he doesn't know what it is and it really doesn't matter because who would go around shouting about how much ammo they have stockpiled.
