Im looking for a place to go shoot Rifles, shotguns and handguns with my Wife and have a responsible/safe time in the Modesto area. Not looking for a Pay and shoot place, Anyone have an idea or place they would go. I don't mind driving 45 minutes to an Hour. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

None that I know of. Only place I can think of is Panoche Hills which is a little more then an hour from Tracy. In fact just around 1:30 minutes to the access road gate. No services out there. So you must bring everything in and then haul it back out.

Is Redhill up between Angels Camp and Columbia still closed? There was a post recently about a spot around Sonora somewhere.

Any info is great. Most of the public rifle ranges in this area charge $15 a head to shoot and are not pleasant to be at. Truth is, my pet peeve is I really dont like shooting around people I don't know.

Use the BLM area near Bagby on the backside of Lake McClure. Thousands of acres and several good places to shoot. Lot better looking scenery then Panoche, several times larger and practically nobody there. PM me for gps info and directions.

Red Hills has been closed since 1991.

Panoche sucks. And the OP already stated he doesn't want a bunch of looky-loos around when he's doing his thing.

well then needs to find some private land. panoche sucks. I like it for what it is. open for long range work. no range wackos saying this is better than that and fellow calgunners are great. But to each their own.

Yeah, I'd be interested in shooting near Modesto, too. Mum lives there and as there's nothing else to do in Modesto...

Drive east from Modesto on highway 132/Yosemite Blvd towards Coulterville.

Use this map to find BLM land. Everything in the area is good for target shooting except Red Hills in Chinese Camp area. (It is has been closed since early 90s for environmental sensitivity - http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/folsom/redhills.html) Look on the east sides of Lake Don Pedro and Lake McClure. There are hundreds of places to shoot on BLM land.

Bummer... Perhaps this has changed since posted, but there is a note on the BLM page saying target shooting is prohibited in the Red Hills BLM land.

I don't know whether to be pissed off at the BLM managers for being unfriendly to us or pissed off at disrespectful asshat shooters who's mess and careless behavior have ruined it for the rest of us.

Hey Lee,
I thought the same.
I reread his post and I think you misunderstood it as did I.

He is saying that it is the only spot prohibited to shooting.
I think we need to go scout this spot.....
You drive, I pay for gas:)
