Domestic Six finally gave me the go-ahead to finish my AR, with a total budget not to exceed $1,000. So, the "with only $100 more you could..." answers are definitely out.

I'm hoping you'll be kind enough to help me spend my cash!

My want/need list is: midlength gas, railed forend, vertical foregrip, BUIS, and a flashlight/mount. That's a tall order for $1K, and no matter how I spec it I can't get it under budget. My only luck was with a Stag 2HT, whose only downfall (that I know) is a carbine-length gas system.

What say you? Can you find/build a better upper than the Stag 2HT with all those components for my budget? TIA.

I definitely feel with you in terms of the amount of $$$ to spend on an AR. I thought the Stag 2HT was the best value when I got mine as well and I never looked back! :D

Well, for $1000 and all the items above, you will have to compromise somewhere. Here's what I put together on the BCM website for your budget:

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i290/ZviDavidoff/Capture.png

BCM Upper with YHM 12" rail, including BCG/CH for a very good price.

The only compromise here would be the YHM rail system. Good BCM upper and BCG/CH, TangoDown grip and Troy BUIS. YHM makes pretty good stuff, but it's no Larue or DD.

Will you be allowed to go $8.70 over budget?:D

-CMMG mid-length complete uppers run about $625 (tenpercent firearms)
-MI mid length rail runs about $150 (riflegear)
-MBUS both about $100 (riflegear)
-Vert grip 12.50-80.00 (Riflegear)
-Flashlight mount ~$50 (riflegear)

Add some tax and shipping and you might be short a flashlight....

ETA: I actually added the cost of both front and rear iron sites but you would only need the rear so you could either upgrad to an actual iron site or put that towards a flashlight.....hope it helps.

OP will still need a bolt group and charging handle... this will be a tad over the $8.70, but a good choice!

That price is including the BCG/CH, as noted in my post. BCM recently updated their website to show BCG?CH as an add-on option to their uppers for $145.

But I like bombadillo's package better...

Start with this for $740:

http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=237276

With $260 left you can get the BCG+CH (usually ~150) then spend the other $100 on BUIS, a flashlight holder and VFG.

So does total budget include the complete lower? If so, $1K for what you've spec'ed out will be hard to do. That said, check out Armalite - they have a sale right now on mid-length uppers that may help get you where you need to be.

Yeah, made it sound like he had a complete lower already built.

I have a fully assembled lower (stripped lower, assembled with an RRA LPK, bullet button, Magpul MilSpec CRT, a 10rd mag from CProducts, a Hogue grip, and one of those HDTP buffers from Spike's).

I'm thinking I may have to spend $1,000 on the upper, barrel, bolt, rail, and buis, and come after the VFG and flashlight+mount later after Domestic Six calms down ;-)

sabre makes a great upper. the one i linked already has the buis and bolt group, so you could get a really nice handguard for $200. or do the bolt-on mounts and get the light and vfg, and forgo the 4 rail hg.
i wish you luck!
