I've got a Bushmaster lower that was registered to me in 2001. It's currently wearing an SOG bull barrel upper. Can someone give me some advice on what I can legally install in the way of another upper? The SOG was represented as a 1 in 9 twist, unfortunately not true, 1 in 12 is the actual twist which limits the bullet weights to 55gr for this upper. Anything heavier and keyholes become the order of the day.
TIA!

If it is a Registered Assault Weapon, you can pretty much do anything you want to it as long as you don't go below 26" OAL, and don't go below 16" with the barrel (permanently attached flash-hiders count for barrel length).

Is this a closed magazine well Bushmaster?

In regard to the title of your post, with a couple exceptions (military/LEO) its not possible to have a "registerred assault weapon" Bushmaster if you purchased it after January 23, 2001. If it truly was registerred as an Assault Weapon congrats and have a beer on me and enjoy the freedom of dropping high capacity magazines like I do :cheers2:

Unlike many people here I consider a 4473 a form of registration (primarily because I know the definition of the word) but a 4473/DROS does not equate to "registerred" status when were discussing Assault Weapons in California.

Assuming you have a closed-magazine well Bushmaster or a r.a.w. XM-15 you can put about anything for an upper on it provided it has a barrel length of 16".

he didn't say he purchased it in 2001, he said it was registered to him in 2001. He could have sent in the AW registration paperwork in 2001 for it as long as it was bought before 2000.

I don't think Bushmaster had a closed mag-well option in 2001.

Yes I see, if he did register it by January 23rd, 2001 as an assault weapon he's fine. I just wanted to clarify that 4473 didn't equate to r.a.w. since its a somewhat common misconception among some new posters.

You can install:

a pistol grip
a folding, collapsible, or thumbhole stock
a flash suppressor
and length barrel as long as the length from the breech face to the end of either the barrel or any permanently installed muzzle attachment is over 16" and that the overall length of the rifle, with stocks collapsed/folded is over 26"
a forward vertical pistol grip

And a flare launcher!

Cool, thanks for clarification. You indeed have a registered AW.

You can thus add any evil feature in 12276.1PC except for a grenade launcher (since it's separately & intrinsically illegal). This means you can have, along with a detachable magazine of any capacity you might legally own, a pistol grip, a forward grip, a thumbhole/folder/collapsing stock, and/or a flash hider. Additionally the rifle can be under 30" (but not under 26") when stock is folded.
