I know absolutely zero about AR's. I want a 9mm carbine based on the AR platform. I also want a detachable magazine with a "live" magazine release button. In essence, I want a featureless build with something similar to a U15 stock but w/o the buffer tube relief. Is this possible?

Not possible at this time to have a 9mm AR without a buffer tube. The 9mm AR is a blowback model that needs the bolt to be able to travel rearwards. If you insist on a 9mm AR without BB, you have to go featureless with an MMG, U15 Stock, or Kydex wing.

Can't go with a live mag release on that though.

I would look into a Solar tactical set up. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=164203
I believe you can use with most stocks on the market. Look into info to go full featurless to be able to drop the mags.

Have fun.
