View Full Version : Really undecided on what to do for a new upper

So ive been looking to purchase a new BCM middy for a little while now.

Then they go and put them on sale, so now its time for me to get one. I had planned on running a Larue handguard on it. BCM offers their midlength uppers with larue handguards already installed; these are on sale too. My plans had included covering the gas block with an 11" rail, but BCM offers either 9" with FSB or 12".

Is the 12" rail too long for a 16" barrel. Currently I am using a CTR and a MOE but am looking to go for something heavier to balance out the middy. Was impressed by an ACS recently but am also thinking a SOPMOD.

Thoughts Calguns? Thanks

What are you mounting? Figure out if you need 12" of room for what you want to mount. If the answer is no, then get the shorter rail. The longer the rails and the more stuff you put on the front, the heavier the nose of your rifle will be and the harder it will be to balance out the weight.

So far the front rail will house:
DD front fixed sight
Larue offset Light mount
Larue FUG below

Its more then enough room, also a combination of looks...

I personally like the look of a 12" rail on a 16" barrel.

Is this the one you're thinking about?

I too like the look of the 12" on a 16" barrel. I use the Troy 13.8 on my 18" and 20" barrels just for the forward mount of the bipod. one of my teammates has the Daniel Defense 12" on his 16" barrel and it gives it more handguard space to move your hand forward or if you are using some kind of terrain as a rest. Good luck BCM are great uppers.

The BCM midlength uppers are great. I am saving up my money to get one for one of my two OLLs that are waiting for uppers.

I'd go for an M4 16":

oh man a BCM 16" middy with a 12" larue rail and an ACS stock with a moe grip and a fug is just about as close to perfection as you can get. If you have the funds do it already!! only thing missing would be a aimpoint or 1-4 power scope.

I have BCM middy with a 12 in DD light rail. I run it with a CTR stock and the gun is very balanced. I think the 12 in rail is the way to go, look good and it leaves your options open for changing your rail set up.

12'' of Cheese grater is plenty. Looks better and more balanced as well.

Those longer rails get heavy after a while.......for those who shoot standing
up anyway.
