What are you going to use it for? Plinking, target, varmint, etc.?

For the lower I prefer to buy the parts and build it up. Upper I prefer to buy already assembled. If money is no object I highly recommend and LWRC upper. Absolutely love mine.

I'm taking notes on what everyone says in here. I'm planning to build an AR also :)

There is no 'best'. It all depends on what you want to do with it.

Nope, Fo-tays are only for Glock Fo-tays. My AR is a Toe-Toe-Twee!

Here's a provocative opinion: Aren't all acceptable quality ARs pretty much the same?

Yeah, yeah: "But [brand x] doesn't have parkerizing under the front sight assembly, and the carrier isn't bead blasted and cryo-checked."

Feh.

If you have pre-ban hi-cap magazines, I would go featurelsss to use the mags.

If you are going bullet button and limited to 10 rounds why not go .308?

I think the best AR-15 has an aimpoint, a 16" barrel, ambi selector, geiselle or other improved trigger, and a quality upper and lpk.

One current price/performance leader:

Oh yeah this one is what I consider best available against zombies:

best zombie killer a 458 socom from RRA or a AR-10 or get an XCR. Or do what alot of us do. piece it together AR's are meant to be fully interchangable so you can get the best of the best.
Like a Lothar Walther barrel "18
troy mid length free float quad rail
flip up yankee hill buis
RRA match LPK
Magpul UBR stock
Sun Devil or RRA or Noveske or CMT or LMT or other matched upper and lower
magpul 10/20 mags
hogue grip
eotech/aimpoint/acog

I think this is what causes the AR addiction you can mix and match your parts and get great accuracy and have fun.
