This morning in the Wall Street Journal, Cerberus, the big private equity firm that has had a few stumbles (they own Chrysler and GMAC oops) announced that they are considering an Initial Public Offerring (in other words, selling to public investors) their firearms business.

They own Bushmaster, Remington, Marlin, Cobb Manufacturing, Dakota Arms, DPMS Panther and silencer-maker Advanced Armaments. They run it all as one company and would sell that way as well.

They cited the uptick in sales of weapons and ammunition. I would assume that equally important to them is that they can show a success, after Chrysler and GMac.

Companies do IPOs when they think the market is advantageous to them (Dow 10,000) they raise the most money that way, simple business law.
Think about a few things before running out and buying up a bunch of shares
1. Is the market going to continue it's rise?
2. Is ammo/firearms demand going to increase more than it already has?
3. Is there money in this economy to support further sales
4. If you were looking to get as much money as you could you would sell high, right?

The guys who run Cerberus know a lot about how to sell a company and value a stock. They will have a good handle on what the stock can sell for.

Free advice, worth what you paid for it.... those of you who might think of buying in, do so early, but don't chase the price if it starts to run away from you.

Frankly, they timed this poorly, but they may just want the money given how the rest of the economy is crap. With the "war" waging down, ammo prices coming down, and the general scare over, the stuff we saw in the last 6 months will be no more, at least not short term.

That's how the govt does it.
Everyone else does it the other way around.
