Today I saw a box of Winchester ammunition in their standard white box and it was labeled as 556 (5.56mm). This is the first time I've seen the box so I checked their website and couldn't find anything that would indicate if it was the same as military 5.56 NATO or just different packaging for .223 Remington, anybody know?

Well, since 5.56 and .223 are not the same thing, I would assume it would have to be 5.56, otherwise it would be misleading and false advertising.

Remember that you can use .223 in a 5.56 rifle, but not vice versa.

I have some of the same stuff, found it at WalMart a while back. If it's labeled as such, it should conform to 5.56 specs for dimensions and pressure. As Alaric said, it's advisable not to shoot it in a .223-chambered rifle.

What is the product code on the box?

Winchester has been packaging 5.56 in white boxes for quite some time...

I bought some of that at Cabela's (Reno) not that long ago.

Yep, that's it, Winchester's website has it listed as "Product Symbol: Q3131"- but the bullet weight and muzzle velocities don't match 5.56x45mm M885A1 Ball measurements. It is closer to the 5.56x45mm M193 Ball ammo which seems to be near identical to the measurements (bullet weight & muzzle velocity) of .223 Remington.
