I originally purchased a TLR-1 for my p226, but realized I wouldn't be using it much since I plan on using the P226 for IDPA. I'm wondering if a TLR on an AR would be a good idea? Are these lights able to handle the recoil of 5.56/.223 without any issues?

I use one of mine on an AR and love it. No problems with recoil at all, they are very well made. I mount mine on the left side and use my thumb to work the switch (right handed shooter.)

I sometimes put my TLR-2 on an AR....works fine so far.

it won't be a problem. i use my TLR-2 on my glock 29 10mm and it works flawless!! if it can withstand a 10mm, it will work fine on your AR.

I've always heard that you should only put rifle lights on rifles. It's not because they can't take the recoil, but because you are more likely to run the handguard into things in the dark with a rifle. A pistol light isn't designed to take that kind of abuse.

The TLR-1/2 lights will work fine on an AR. I run one on my pack gun, an SU-16 (also a .223 rifle), and have never had an issue. If you go this route, I would recommend you look into a pressure switch for it though.

+1 on the pressure switch!!

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I'll have to find a pressure switch for sure...

Does the TLR-1 throw light far enough for rifle distances? It seems too weak to be useful except for home defense. I ended up going with a Surefire E2D LED flashlight with a VTAC light mount.

That's what i was thinking as well. I plan on putting the TLR-1 either on my AR pistol or possibly the AR22, so throw distance won't be as much of a factor.

Ah, got it. Perfect for those uses. BTW, if you do need throw, you can usually get a Surefire 6P with upgraded CREE LED on ebay for around $60-$80, plus a $15 VTAC mount < $100.

I run a TLR1 on my HD AR. Works fine, handles the recoil like a champ.

Run a TLR-1 on both my AR's. One is at 12 O'clock on my full rail DDM4. The other is on a FSB mount on my M4 clone. I prefer the toggle switches to a tape.

I had a TLR-1 on my AR and later put it on a 12ga 870. It still worked like new when I included it in a sale.

Ran a TLR-2 for a bit, and liked it. I eventually went a completely different route with my rifle, that includes no light.

I've strapped the TLR 1 I keep on my nightstand gun onto a 12 gauge for 100rds of 00 buck with no problems. I can't imagine the light recoil of 5.56 giving the light any issues.
