View Full Version : Eotech 551 HWS.
I'm hoping owners of Eotech HWS units can help me out. I bought an Eotech 551 HWS off an online vendor, but the reticle did not look right. At least it did not look like the reticle on the simulator program on the Eotech website. What I was expecting was a 65 MOA ring with a 1 MOA dot. But what I saw was a 65 MOA ring formed by little hash marks and the 1 MOA dot which looked more like a triangle made with these same hash marks. Anyways, I returned the unit for replacement and the seller said that his other Eotech units have the same reticle.
I'm trying to decide who is right. I have the option for a refund or replacement. I'm hoping someone can comment on this before I decide.
P.S. I have never worn glasses and I do not believe my vision is messed up. Thanks a lot.

Try turning down the intensity of the reticle down and focus on the target, rather than the reticle itself. I'm sure the reticle on my 512 is the same as the 551, just w/o the night vision. My reticle ring was fuzzy at first, until my eyes got used to it. Quick target aquistion with this sight is excellent, which is what I'm using this sight for.

The Eotech is illuminated by a laser diode, rather than a traditional LED, which causes the reticle to have what's referred to as "laser speckle". The reticle looks like it's made up of a bunch of little dots, and has a grainy appearance.
You can see this in any laser pointer if you look closely at the dot on a piece of paper.
LED illuminated reticles don't have this, and are more even, but my experience is that LED illuminated sights wash out much more easily in bright light, while the Eotech stays more visible in brighter sunlight.
I don't know if this is the effect you're seeing, but it does annoy some people with the Eotech. I got used to it pretty quickly, as leego said.
There were some Eotechs made with a 15 moa diamond reticle, but no ring, and they're pretty uncommon.
