There are a lot of people who have had problems with the newer ones. Mine worked fine. Though I think you might be able to get more scope for the money these days and possibly avoid the potential leupold issues. Check out the optics forum, lots of discussions on this!

The brand doesnt matter near as much as how much you want to spend. You can get a $40 scope, or you can get a $3000 scope, whats your budget?

If you are actually shooting varmint. Atleast 12X and Target turrets.

my range is up to $500, i am more curious if it matters v1x,v2x or the new v3x because there is a huge price difference between them. i am only target shooting at 200 yards mostly with the occasional 1000 yard range.

so i think i am going to go with the leupold vx-3 3.5-10-40mm or the vx-3 2.5-8x36mm. I have one more question, what base and rings should i go with?

Personally I would go with a badger ordnance 20 MOA base but there are others for cheaper. That scope won't get you enough elevation to reach out to 1000 yards unless it is on a 20 MOA rail. Maybe im wrong but how much adjustment does it have in it?

If you're on a budget, EGW 20MOA base, Seekins rings.

How does egw and seekins compare to badger?

the seekins rings are pretty expensive, any other suggestions to go with the egw base?

midwayusa has a nikon 6-18 mildot that i have on my varmit and its sweet. its 299.00. love mine. i will probably buy another one for my AR15 SPR build,. i have about 1000rds through the rfle with that scope and the only real adjustments ive had to made were from a dry desert to about 2500ft elevation on a humid day. My only complaint is that there is no real way to lock the turrents when you get a zero, some scopes have a little set screw type. wish this had one.

i have a nightforce 20moa base, with leupold medium QRW rings. On it now i have the target turrent son it now that come with it, slightly lower profile and touch wider

and it has gotten me out to 1000yds with room in elevation to sapre.

so it looks like i will go with the egw 20MOA base and the Burris 1" Xtreme Tactical Picatinny-Style Rings. Does this look like it will work?

also would the short rings work?

That would be just fine but not sure on the ring height. Which scope did you decide on ?

leupold vx-3 3.5-10x40mm... or the 4.5-14x40mm depending if the seller can make me a deal.

I would go with the Leupold mark IV aluminum rings. You can call them and ask what height you would need with that scope's objective bell diameter.

also, when I buy rings I check Amazon and Ebay -- Amazon has Leupold tVX-3 3-10x40mm for $431:

I think just about every legit manufacturer's 20 MOA base is good -- Seekins, Leupold, Nighforce, GG&G, Larue -- EGW -- it's a matter of price.

BTW -- Any Leupold is great, but for a little more than you wanted to spend I think this Mark 2 is a pretty good choice --

http://www.amazon.com/Leupold-4-12x40mm-Reticle-Waterproof-Standard/dp/B002LSALXA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1255489078&sr=1-3

Like the VAri-3 it is a one inch tube, but has more power and an adjustible objective. Both worthy features. Comes either Mildot, range crosshair and fine crosshair. I have a couple of Mark 2s and I love them. bright and clear, and the reticles rock.

i have a VX-II and a VX-III and i love em' both. i had leuppy change out the turrets and reticle in my VX-III and it's super nice. my policy is to spend more on an optic than my most expensive firearm... you wont be disappointed...

there are so many different scopes for that price range that its hard to pic one..lol i use a bushnell 4200 for my savage 10fp .308 but i would of also considered other such as the nikon, leupold, the super sniper fixed, best thing to do is go look threw what you can at stores such as cabelas and bass pro if you can... that is a big help in choosing
