Steyr AUG is banned by name. No BB is going to make it CA legal.

MSAR makes an AUG clone, though parts are not interchangeable.

If Steyr decided to make an AUG type rifle with a completely different model name, you could probably run it with a BB and it would be OK.

One of the additional problems with the AUG and clones is the length. I think that it has to have an 18" barrel to be over the CA AW limit of 30".

You should be looking for a Steyr USR if that is the case. You can BB that one just fine.

Saber Defense? or MSAR

Sabre Defence makes the "Steyr AUG/SA" under contract for Steyr.

Unfortunately on the AW list is "Steyr: AUG"

While an argument could be made that the "AUG/SA" is not actually listed, I wouldn't want to be caught with one when the MSAR's are available and ROCK.

If you REALLY want a true Steyr, then get a USR and rebuild it into an AUG/SA A3. It'll be spendy, but you can do it.

AUG/SA is what the Roberti Roos list names. As the AUG/A3 is NOT NAMED wouldn't it be fine with a maglock?

Speaking of which;
How are people maglocking USRs or MSAR STGs?

MSAR, and I think radd has a lock for it.

Wasn't there a thread last week about Sabre Defense beginning production on the USAUG/A3? I was under the impression from the other thread that the new name that Sabre was going to use made it legal in CA (with a BB and appropriate OAL).

I'm curious what do the "right people" here on Calguns think about the "off-listness" of a rifle marked "Steyr AUG/A3" versus "Steyr AUG". Also, is the version I see pictures of that has a lower front rail with no built in vertical grip available for civilian purchase? If so, then the obvious difference in the appearance of the A3 would also raise my comfort level a bit in calling it a different model that is off-list. Thoughts?

hmm, well ive seen Colt AR15s sold in Cali that were only "oll" because they were marked slightly different...

No, not slightly different. In order to be named make and model must be banned. Colt is the make, but the model wasn't banned. Both Steyr and AUG are on the ban list. That means any AUG model built by manufacturer Steyr is on the list. That is like trying to argue a Colt AR15 A2 is legal because it has the A2 on the end.

Wouldn't chance it personally. That's a hard sale...not to mention a good majority of FFL's in CA wouldn't even dare touch it. Makes Colt 6940's look like a cake walk.

the Roos List names the model as an AUG/SA by the way... Is it a Steyr AUG or AUG/SA?

I have done some featureless msar grips. I like the aug and it would be nice to get the sabre a3 but the msar is just as nice.
