Hi all,

Has anyone heard about these or seen them at any of the gun shows?

http://ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=5846&return=Y

It looks like the MSRP is at around $872.00, according to galleryofguns.com

What with Ruger's SR556, and it's already-successful and long-lived Mini-14 variants..........is this a strategic move by the company to capture the economic-strapped demographic who wants an AR-style rifle but doesn't want to shell out a grand for one? Hmmm.....what do y'all think?

It looks heavy, but if it's a Ruger, then function is undeniable. And that's MSRP fellas, not actual market price..

Beyond hideous.

Yep. I like the Ruger Minis personally, but if I want to get a tactical-looking rifle to shoot the 5.56 or .223 calibers, I'll just get an AR - not starting an argument about which rifle is better, all I'm saying is the AR is a far less hideous "tactical look."

HAHA! Love the negative reviews, people, but honestly.......we don't know how it performs yet, how it holds up long-term, or what kind of accuracy it has. So, it may be a bit unfair to dump on the rifle without even giving it a chance. Only time will tell if the performance of the gun matches its, um, aesthetics. *gulp :D

Cool, more power to you. Too much Mini-14 hate IMO. Something about the mini feels like comfort food - mm mm good.

Its crap you can get for your existing Mini already...its nothing special at all. We all just recognize the parts, they are already made and people have already done this. If you want to put that on a Mini you can do it for less....and if you want a bullet button on a Mini, go right ahead.

Its still a mini-14 under all that crap. I mean you can put lip-stick on a pig but it doesnt change the fact that its a pig.

Just alot of mini and kel-tec haters on this site...

ONLY AR's are ok on here.. Lame.

I think it is far too ugly to waste that much money on one. Put a normal wood stock on it and then I might be interested. It won't ever replace my little AR carbine, but I love guns so one more couldn't hurt.

The only mini worth getting us the stainless AC556 IMHO - but we can't get them. I remember the Mini was the rifle of choice for the SOF editors who went to go play in the bush - it was a time when reliabilty and MOA meant minute of Angolan.... I like the mini, and one day I'll get one, a stainless and wood one, but for now my HK SL6 does everything so much better it's way on the back burner.

If you like it, get it! The mini is a fine gun.

10-11-2009, 9:26 AM
Ok so yes the AC556 is the coolest and if I ever get to a free state I will either get one or build a replica of one. :)

People on here trash anything that is NOT a AR style rifle.

Kinda freaking annoying actually.

Enjoy all lead throwerss will ya geez?

Yea... I agree with most of you. Looks disgusting but the Mini 14 is dependable, at least was when I had mine. I was not impressed at all with it's accuracy though. Some could counter that with "you need to improve your shooting" or "the rifle is minute of man, it doesn't have to be moa" but in the end, in my opinion, it wasn't worth keeping in the safe.

Not hating on the mini, but in my opinion this particular version will struggle to find a market. People who want a tactical carbine will lean towards the AR or AK platform. People who want a basic, utility carbine generally like the mini, but they won't like this model. Who's going to buy it?

10-11-2009, 10:02 AM
If the mini did anything better than (or even as good as) any other semi-auto rifle there might be a reason for it but since everything it does is mediocre at best, I've never wanted one.

Tactical Ranch Rifle? LOL

If I were going to get a mini, I would not get that. A regular one looks waay better.

that thing is ugly. if you're gonna get a Mini, get the NRA edition. I have one and it shoots very well. the rubber hogue stock takes some getting used to, but its nice once you do.

I think you are still missing the point. You can put CAA accessories on any Mini, for less than that price tag...or get an Accuracy Systems upgraded Mini.

Minis see service in some foreign military and here in our own LE communities. There is nothing wrong with a Mini....

That is the part everyone is missing here. Pistol grip and folder makes it fall under the AWB definition.

Ruger does not sell this configuration in Cali.

Are these new? I've seen these on their website for quite some time now. I even considered getting one with the SCAR CQB Stock (https://policeguns.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=35_271&products_id=5896) before I put my AR together. I wouldn't mind getting one later.

Looks very mall ninja-ish. They took the fast track from the whole concept of the mini. Its almost unidentifiable.

Count me among those (the few?) who like the aesthetics.

That being said, even at the $589 CDNN is offering these for, I think I'd still be more inclined to choose a Mini configuration that does not require a BB.

Blah. Hate the mini in general but that is just ugly. The standard format looks better IMO. If you are going to go tacti-cool just get an AR and save your buddies the concussions from your Mini brass pelting them in the head at 200fps.

10-11-2009, 8:35 PM
Why bother? With that pistol grip and detachable mags, it's gonna qualify as an AWB in CA which means you'll need to find someone to Cali-neuter it before it can come in to the state. You might as well go with an OLL AR build.

I love my mini and I like this new one. If I can just get the stock then I can have two different style guns for less than the much loved black gun.

I would do that to my mini if I moved out of state. It's not as pretty as the AR15 but it'll get the job done within 50 yards. Ever since picking up factory 10 rounders, my mini has been perfect.

I'm not sure how simply applying such additional functionality as a pistol grip, collapsible stock, and tactical rails in any way represent an effort to emulate an AR platform.

To me, it simply seems to be an attempt to add functionality.

I guess I appreciate it for what it is - a tactical 5.56 platform built around a Garand-type action - and don't see it trying to be something it isn't. I don't see it "trying to be" an AR-15 any more than I see an AR-70 trying to be one. Ruger does make a firearm meant to emulate the AR-15 (the SR556) - but this isn't it.

Beauty, on the other hand, is in the eye of the beholder, and I can see why some would find it to be half-Chinese, half-Native American (Fug Lee).

I guess I find beauty in the function, and honestly can't recall the last time I bought a firearm simply because it looked purdy. ;)

The only thing that rifle is missing is some rainbow splash decals and a fake chrome barbwire and skulls license plate frame from Pep Boys...

Ugh.
