I tried to do a search but came up with nothing, I am looking to piece together an AR chambered in .223 but I have no idea what I am doing so I am looking for suggestions on what lower to start with. I spoke with my local dealer and he has his opinions but I would like some more input before I jump in. Thanks for any input, it is appreciated. Thanks

Just about all lowers these days are equal. Buy the cheapest unless it's a Vulcan.

OLL's can be found by several manufactures..
Pretty much all mil spec.
Get what you can afford or by brand name like (S&W M&P-15)

The lowers are pretty much the same. Pick a lower by fit, finish and/or logo. Some people prefer to spend the extra money on the nicer looking billet lowers like POF, Seekins, or Mega. Others like plain jane forged receivers like Stag, DoubleStar, Mega, or LAR. Others like the free laser engravings that are offered by Anvil Arms. Some like colors in the roll marks and fake three position selectors like Spike's Tactical.

Personally I am a big Spike's fan. They make a great product, CA friendly, and their customer service is outstanding: http://www.spikestactical.com/z/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=104_65

If I had the money I'd get a POF or a Seekins: http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=834 or http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop%2Fmanufacturer&manufacturer=97

TI BDX and Sun Devil was really desired for a while: http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=1109 or http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=122

Mega seems to be the most desired now: http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=1539 or http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=121

The differences besides looks are pretty minor and the many are made by only the few: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=50947

A lot of these companies also make matching uppers like Sun Devil and Mega.

Thanks for all of the responses guys, someone had asked earlier where I live and I will update some info as soon as I figure it out but for the mean time I live in Hanford. There are a couple of shops around here that I am aware of but only one that I think I would trust to put one together for me. Although, the more I look around and with the vast amount of information on this site I would like to do as much of the assembly myself if that is not a bad idea for someone with no experience to do so.

Buy a "CalGuns" lower ,they are made by Kaiser and help to support the site you are on. If you are in San Diego .....no transfer or shipping fees. :)

No internet or FFL to FFL transfer fees. You buy direct (as in walking into their shop)from Kaiser, just add DROS plus tax.

Yes ,they are JD now ,but have they were made before Kaiser broke up.
The NEW # for JD is 619-298-8800 . Ask for Rob. Below is a CGN that a
Gunner roll painted . Notice that the finish on the lower looks polished . Sweet !

Rock River Arms LAR-15 stripped lower is the way to go.

Some have said that all OLLs are essentially equal and not to spend a bunch of money on the lower. Where would be the one place to splurge on the high dollar items that would make a difference in how the rifle shoots. I believe I am going to go with a Spikes lower but then what parts kit? T here seems to be a couple different kits on spikes site alone is this the place where you want to spend the extra money? Thanks

Barrel
Optic
Trigger
Upper Receiver

edit: Those aren't listed in any particular order, a lot of people will debate the order for days on end.

Rock River Arms LAR-15 stripped lower is the way to go.

some people would suggest any OLL other than RRA, just due to the vagueness in how some RRA rifles are listed.
As an example, http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=141885

Just get a non-RRA upper.

Merc1138
10-09-2009, 2:53 PM
Or just get any other legal lower receiver, and then be able to use any upper you might want since the upper does the work anyway.
