I'm in the process of assembling an upper, I'm not sure what brand is best to use that is not painful in the pocket. I'm planning to use a 16 inch in 556. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Most barrels you can find will be of good quality for an average shooting gun. Pick the profile you want and shop around. Find one in stock and get it :)

CMMG is going to be one of the best values out there. Not crap, not expensive, not super high-end, but good solid quality stuff.

If you want a NICE barrel, get a Noveske or a Daniel Defense, but those will probably break the bank.

Get a BCM

Make sure it's chrome-lined, 1/7 - 1/9 twist. Midlength gas system is preferable to carbine in a 16" barrel. Rifle-length is best of all.

And as stated, CMMG is probably the best overall value right now. You can pay a bit less and get questionable quality, or pay a lot more for questionable benefits. Just my $.02

I've had good results from DPMS.

My suggestion is to buy a barrel with a mid-length gas system.
They run nicer than carbine length gas systems.

Total noob question. Head spacing? Do you just screw these barrels in due to standard sizes, or do you have to ream AR barrels too?

AR barrels come standard with the barrel extension installed, and it's the barrel extension that decides headspace.

The extension just pops into the upper receiver and the barrel nut tightens it up and holds it in place. Barrel-to-upper fit doesn't affect headspace unless you do something really really REALLY wrong. And even then it shouldn't affect headspace :)

AR barrels are pre-headspaced.

LMT or BCM would be the way I'd go.

So if I have a brand new out of the box kit I shouldn't need to do anything other than assemble it? I talked to a guy today who told me I should have it head spaced. Another perhaps stupid question is do I need any special tools or would my usual, hardware store type tools do the trick?

Well not really complete, some sights so you could hit the target would be nice :)

I just noticed in your signature that the tags on your truck are expired.
